Administrative Announcements
December is Kindness month.
During the Month of December CMIT Elementary staff has been charged with several tasks to prompt caring, kindness, and community support.

As a motivational practice, on Fridays CMIT Administration and CLF have been providing breakfast for the staff. In the month of December in leu of breakfast the school has donated to a charity.

When our staff was notified, the next morning, 2 staff members brought the staff breakfast, stating that this was their donation to their colleagues to support them and keep everyone smile. #kindessmatters.

Drop Off /Pick Up and Parking!!!

Dear CMIT Elementary Parents,
Please follow our morning drop off procedures. Remember that our drop off location is back side of the building, in front of the cafeteria doors. We start receiving students at 7:35 am. There is only one car line in the mornings. Join the car line and have your child(ren) ready to get off the car upon arrival at the door. Dropping off from the car shouldn't be taking more than 30 seconds. We need your cooperation in this matter. This will increase the pace of drop off in the morning.

Pick Up in the afternoon begins at 2:20 pm. Please ensure that you are entering from in front of the CLF building only. Parents are to remain in their vehicles. Students we are not picked up by 2:55 will be sent to Enrichment and charged an emergency fee due upon pick up.

Multiculture Ornament Donation
CMIT Elementary would like to get into the Holiday spirit and decorate our front office by showing our multicultural diversity. If you would like to contribute, please bring in an ornament that represents your culture during the week of December 5th through December 16th.

Also if you would like to donate undecorated wreaths or a small unlit and undecorated tree that would be outstanding. We can't wait to see what the collection will bring!

2017 National Math Festival
The National Math Festival brings together some of the most influential mathematicians of our time to inspire and challenge participants to see math in new and exciting ways. Through a day of lectures, hands-on demonstrations, art, films, performances, puzzles, games, children’s book readings, and more, we bring out unexpected sides of mathematics for everyone, from toddlers to adults of all ages.

The National Math Festival is free and open to the public from 10:00 a.m. till 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in the heart of downtown Washington, D.C.

At the National Math Festival, you'll get a glimpse of some of the many ways in which math patterns your life. Learn how big math can get, from the power of symmetry in shaping the universe to the outer reaches of black holes—then zero in on your own life, from the mathematics of eyesight to the inner workings of social networks! Learn about the power of hurricane storm surges and the math behind drag racing, music, and dance!

This week in Kindergarten...
English Language Arts
We will read the story "Little Panda." It is a nonfiction text about the development of a Panda at the San Diego Zoo. We will be comparing and contrasting, working with initial /n/ and /b/, and learning about verbs.

Mathematics
We will be continue to discuss shapes! We will analyze, compare, and create shapes from smaller shapes.
Please note: students should still practice finding 1 and 2 fewer. Be sure to get some extra practice at home! An easy way to incorporate this at home is during dinner prep or at the grocery. For example, "I have eight apples, but I need 2 more (or 2 fewer). How many will that be? Can you do that for me?" This will help make Subtraction and Addition much easier later in the year!

Science
Students will be learning about motion and magnets. What types of motion are there? What is force? How do we apply force?

High Frequency Words
Here are our sight words we have learned so far. Remember to practice reading and writing these words regularly! (When reading at home, if you see these words, have your child point it out!) All of the words we will learn this year are available on our grade level website under "Sight Words."

I, am, little, to, a, have, is, the, we, my, like, he, for

REMINDERS
- Homework is due on FRIDAY each week. Remember to look for their new homework packet on Fridays. Homework that is not submitted by the due date will be given a ZERO.
- Please read regularly! Remember that just 20 minutes a day can boost your child's reading levels!
- As the weather gets colder, remember that we still go outside for recess when the weather is above 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately!
- If you would like to chaperone any future field trips, you must have a fingerprint background check. This can be obtained from the Fingerprint office at the county building 14201 School Lane, Upper Marlboro, MD Monday-Friday from 8:00am-3:45pm. For more information or to contact the fingerprinting office, please look at the fingerprint office website: http://www1.pgcps.org/fingerprinting/
- Please remember to send an extra pair of uniform clothes to keep in your child's cubbie at school in the event of accidents or spills.
- Uniform is enforced daily, including uninterrupted black shoes. Please go to http://cmitelementary.org/uniform-policy/ for more information.

Mrs. Dougherty's Super Star News by Jamal Bah, Aaron Stills, and Dami Fawehinmi
Our student of the week is Dorcas Adeala (pictured). We interviewed Dorcas and learned all about our classmate. Her favorite color is orange. When she grows up she wants to be a veterinarian. Dorcas has been great in class. Dorcas' clip has been super star on a good start on the second quarter. We enjoy having her as classmate!

Math
This week we have been focused on learning how to estimate and measure in inches, feet, and yards. We are moving on to the metric system and regrouping next week.

Reading
Next week we will focus on a story called Anansi Goes Fishing. We will be learning about antonyms, compound words, summarizing, comparing and contrasting, verbs for past, present, future, and writing narrative poems

My name is Dami and I’m going to share my animal fantasy story with you. It’s called the Horse and the Feast. Once upon a time there was a Horse who lived in a house. It was a warm and sunny day. It was 1:00pm. One day when Horse was setting up the table, his friends Cat, Frog, Pig, and dog all came. Horse was surprised that the animals came early then he expected. Horse said “let’s get our feast on!” Underwater there lived a grumpy Shark. Shark was a bully and bullies are not allowed at the feast. Since the lake was so close to the house and the door was open, Shark got his tube and carefully connected the tube and swam up it. And then Shark quickly jumped inside the house and ate all the food. When Shark went back into lake he realized it was not nice to be a bully. And Shark jumped back into the house and apologized. Then horse said you can stay here only if your nice. Horse said ”promise” and Shark said ”promise.” The friends lived happily ever after.

Thank you parents for donating money to buy awesome things for us!!! We love it!

We had a fantastic time at the Women’s Basketball game at University of Maryland at College Park. The scholars were in great spirit cheering for the home team. Their energy was so contagious, Maryland won. Go Terps!. In ELA and Social Studies, we will work on making inferences, and continue to learn about the first people in communities in the United States. In Math and Science, we will continue to work on division and multiplication strategies and force and motions.

Finishing Strong
Greetings Parents,

Happy December! This is the last month of 2016 and we are going to finish it out strong. Scholars are working hard at synthesizing new information and asking lots of questions. This week in Math, we will be using geometric measurements to understand concepts of area and relate it to multiplication and addition. In Science, we will be conducting investigations to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object. In Reading & Writing, we will be comparing and contrasting the central message of two texts. In Social Studies, we are continuing to study how people modify, protect and adapt to their environment.

Congratulations to the following scholars who have been R.O.A.R.ing in the school community! Keep up the good work!

Learning and Soaring!
Celebrating our November Students of the Month
Oluwabusoye Okunuga and Genesis Edwards

How I can help my child Learn and Soar:-

1. Teach them that learning is their ‘job.’
Parents often ask what they can do to get their child interested in a particular subject or task. Lesson No. 1 is the most important lesson a child can learn about school: No one cares whether or not a child is interested in something. Of course, children learn better when they find the subject matter interesting, but what children really need to learn is that they must also learn things that they don’t find particularly interesting. That’s the job children have.

2. Aim high.
You don’t have to be a Tiger mom, but you have to realize that parental expectations have a huge impact when it comes to student performance. If you don’t expect your child to do well, your expectations will likely be met.

3. Distinguish studying from learning.
Very often a parent asks a child if the child has done his or her studying – and the child has. Not good enough! The parent needs to verify that the child has learned the lesson. Quiz the child to be sure (this gets more difficult as the child gets older and begins to take more advanced subjects). Quiz the child again on the same material a few days later, and then again a week later. What good is learning something that is forgotten a week later? Remember that employers later in life will care less about the diplomas your child has and will care more about the skills and knowledge he or she has acquired. Source-www.metroparent.com

#KindnessChallenge
After a month spent devoting our efforts to demonstrating GRATITUDE by slowing down and recognizing all that we have, all we are offered... it is now time that we devote ourselves to all we can do, in spreading KINDNESS throughout our community (and country!)

Along with a #KindnessChallenge prompt every day,(something to try and do for someone else before the day's end) all of the Tigers at CMIT will also be charged with recognizing the kindness they witness in others throughout our building! It is our goal to cover the hall in our 'hashtags', with the kindness running rampant throughout our building.

It is not enough that we are grateful for what we have, we must show that through our kind actions towards others!

I encourage you to have Table Talks around the dinner table, or Car Ride Reflections on the way to school, and ask your Tiger what kind thing s/he did for someone else, and also what kind thing did s/he witness in someone else.

It starts with us, are you up for the #KindnessChallenge? :)

Graciously,
Your School Counselor

Remember to read.
Reading –let’s face it – is a vital part of learning. When someone thinks of school, reading something – an article, a story, a book, a test question – either pops directly into the conscious mind or flits from the subconscious level, tickling the edges of the conscious train of thought. But why is reading so important? Is it because the better a reader a student is, the easier of a time that student has understanding directions for an assignment; the easier it will be for that student to complete the assigned work; or the easier it will be for that student to complete an essay in any subject area? Actually, those are only parts of why student success depends so hugely upon his or her success in reading.

Reading imparts on students a much richer vocabulary than just hearing spoken words can possibly provide. Rarely does a spoken conversation include a description of an angry individual becoming inflamed at a remark, rather than getting mad at what someone said. We as a society tend to ask questions, but reading helps us to inquire or compile a query instead. This vocabulary will take a younger student who proclaims while exasperated that someone ‘cutted’ them in line, along a tremendous path toward higher education and beyond academia into what is commonly termed the ‘real’ world.

The ability to read not only helps a student to do well in language arts classes, but all subjects, as well as allowing common tasks to become easier. It’s easier to sign up for wireless service when you know what you are signing, and cooking a special meal for the first time to impress that special someone is more likely to come out well if you can read the recipe properly, and understand the importance of following the steps in order. Reading even helps us communicate in writing better by allowing us to know how words are spelled and how grammar works – whether we choose to use it in our texts or not.

More than all that, though, are the doors that reading opens our minds whenever we pick up a newspaper, a reference tome, or a storybook. Being able to read allows that reader the chance to open a book and learn something new, deal with an author trying to persuade, or a new world cropping up in front of that reader when a purely entertaining piece is opened.

Reading brings up questions that drive current and future scientists to find answers, chefs to invent new cooking techniques to make food healthy yet tasty, and shows readers what an amazing world we live in. The wonderful universe of reading is ever expanding as more and more possibilities show up on store shelves, both electronic and physical.

The more you know, the smarter you grow – so pick something up and read!
