Pick up and dismissal
Please be reminded to Drop off and pick up your scholars on time. 7:35 we open our doors for students to enter and 2:20 pm we begin dismissal.

At dismissal if you are having an emergency please call the front desk at 240-573-7240. We can place your child in Enrichment for the day for a $20 fee.

CPS Child Protective services and/or the Police will have to be called if we are not contacted prior to 2:55 about a child and their pick up arrangements. We can not have unattended children in the building, in the parking lot, on the sidewalks or playground before or after school.

Please work with us. We do realize that dismissal has been a long process, but we have been moving much faster and it is down to 20-23 minutes.

Please also follow the new traffic pattern, all cars must enter through the last entrance in front of CLF and exit by the 2nd opening CMIT ES side. This reduces confusion with traffic. Also please stop speeding down Chevy Chase Drive and through the parking lot. We are trying to keep all of our staff and students safe.

Plan accordingly.

Thank you for all of your patience.

Advanced Math Program
Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation (CLF) Advanced Math Program (AMP) prepares students in grades 4-12 for different levels of competition math. AMP runs almost every Saturday and will begin on September 10th this year. Every Saturday, students work in small groups with an instructor from 9AM to 1PM. We split the classes based on mathematical ability so that students can work with others around their same level. Our middle school classes focus on MathCounts preparation. The High school students primarily work for college organized math contests. The AMP program is only open to students from CLF schools.

We are holding tryout dates all throughout August: every Saturday from 9:30-11:30 AM and every Monday from 5-7 PM. Students only need to attend one tryout date, but we have made many dates available to accommodate busy summer schedules.

If you and your family are interested in joining the AMP, you can sign up for a tryout date at this link: www.clfadvancedstudies.org/#!register/con8

You can also find more information at www.clfadvancedstudies.org/#!about2/coo8

If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to email us at advancedmath@clfmd.org.

CMIT Academic Calendar
CMIT follows PGCPS calendar. Parents are encouraged to register text or email alerts for school closings and emergencies by filling out the online form on PGCPS website: https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/PGCPS/subscriber/new

Students and their families are asked not to schedule any vacations or trips to coincide with school days for the 2016-17 school year. Maryland state law requires that all students between the ages of 5-16 attend school regularly. Absences from and tardies to school is disruptive to the learning process. Studies have shown that students who attend school on a regular basis earn better grades and learn more than those who are frequently absent. Students will earn incentives for Perfect Attendance.

Please note that June 12, 2017 – June 15, 2017 are assigned as inclement weather make-up days and students may be required to attend school on those days, depending on the weather conditions throughout the Winter. Please do not any family vacations until after June 16, 2017.

Parents and students are asked to visit PGCPS website for 2016-17 calendar updates: http://www1.pgcps.org/calendar/

The state of Maryland recognizes the following as lawful (excused) absences from school:

-Death in the immediate family
-Illness of the student
-Quarantine
-Court summons
-Principal-approved activity
-Mental or physical incapacity
-Violent storms
-Observance of a religious holiday
-State of emergency

Parent Volunteers
As required by the PGCPS (Administrative Procedure 4215), all volunteers must follow the security process.

The information to assist you in obtaining clearance, if you have not already done so, is as follows:

http://www1.pgcps.org/security/index.aspx?id=188863

For about $7.00 you can get a commercial background check. This will expire at the end of every August after each school year and allows you to volunteer at school and on field trips. The second option is for about $60 - you can get fingerprinted. The fingerprinting is good indefinitely as long as you volunteer at least once a school year. Both services are available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 11:45 am and 12:30 pm to 3:45 pm at the Sasscer Administration Building: 14201 School Lane in Upper Marlboro, 20772.

Please contact Mrs. Virgil for further information regarding the Volunteer process at CMIT ES.

Kindergarten
Week 2 is all about COOPERATION!
We made it through the first week of school!!! Please give your Kindergartener extra love for being so fantastic all week!

For the second week of school, we will be discussing "Cooperation" each morning. We will focus on how to work with one another and the importance of being a team. Encourage activities that promote cooperation at home by having your child work on projects or tasks with your or their siblings!

A few reminders:
- If you have not done so already, please send your child with an extra pair of uniform clothes (including underwear and socks!) to keep in his/her cubby. It is important we have something students can change into in the event of accidents or spills! This also keeps us from disrupting your day for a set of clean clothes.
- Uniforms are enforced daily. This includes uninterrupted black shoes. If you have questions, please refer to the school website: cmitelementary.org/uniform-policy/
- Please remember to read nightly! A love of reading starts at home, and it is an easy (and educational!) way to spend quality time with your child. We will be placing reading logs beginning September to help you keep track! ;]
- Back to School Night is September 8 at 6:30 for Kindergarten. See you then!

First Week in for the 5th Graders
This week, 5th grade began reviewing school and class rules and expectations. In math, students started working on deepening their understanding of place value. In science, students are learning about our Solar System, and in ELA, students are working on reviewing writing rules and making inferences. For Social Students, they are learning about the “5 Themes of Geography.” Homework packets were sent home on Tuesday for both classes. Students should expect homework on Mondays and they are to be returned, completed on Fridays. End of week quizzes is to be expected.

On Monday, August 29, students will begin their Pre-Assessments for Math, Science, and Language Arts (ELA). The objective for the assessments is to determine students’ knowledge.

Please ensure that your child gets plenty of rest and come prepared to listen, participate in learning, act responsibly, and respect themselves and others. There are a lot of topics that will be covered this year, so full cooperation is expected each day and by every student. This is the year of challenges in preparation for Middle School!

Please visit our grade level website for future news and updates! http://grade5.cmitelementary.org and Class Dojo to see how your child is doing in class.

About the Picture: The student in the picture came to the board to explain the process of another student's work as they are developing their understanding of expanded form in place value!

Thank you,
