Volunteer Application and Approval Process Information
|
In November 2020, PGCPS launched an online volunteer application and approval process. Visit www.pgcps.org/volunteer for more information on becoming a volunteer and to access the application. Follow these simple steps to get started:
Step 1 – Apply Online (Annual Requirement)
All volunteers must complete the PGCPS online volunteer application located on the PGCPS volunteer website under the “Become a Volunteer” section and takes approximately three minutes to complete.
Click here to visit the website: https://www.pgcps.org/offices/compliance/student-safety/frequently-asked-questions-background-checks-and-volunteers
Step 2 – Complete Background Screening Process (One-Time Requirement)
To ensure the safety of our students, PGCPS requires a fingerprint background check and Child Protective Services (CPS) clearance for each person who will provide volunteer services more than once each school year. The total fee for these clearances is $62.25 per applicant. Please note that this is a one-time requirement for all volunteers.
To schedule an appointment to complete the background screening process, please visit: https://bithgroup1.schedulista.com/
Step 3 – Complete Mandatory Safety Training Modules (Annual Requirement)
Once you complete the online volunteer application, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your application and assigning you a unique Volunteer Identification Number (VIN). Approximately 48 hours after your application is submitted, you will receive an email with a link to log in and complete the required training modules via the Vector Solutions (formerly SafeSchools) platform. You must use your VIN as your username and password to login and complete the required training modules.
You are required to complete these modules annually. The mandatory training modules for volunteers can be located at the following web address: https://pgcpsvolunteers-md.safeschools.com/login
Once you have received confirmation of approval to serve as a volunteer, completed the fingerprint background check and CPS clearance process, and have completed the Vector Solutions (formerly SafeSchools) safety training modules, please utilize the CMIT NES Volunteer SY 2022-23 Form to upload a CLEAR and READABLE format (pdf works best for uploads) of the following:
1. Email from PGCPS titled Volunteer Application APPROVED
2. Fingerprint Receipt (for parents who submitted the receipt to CMIT in previous years you may request a copy from Mrs. Virgil at evirgil@cmitelementary.org)
3. Safety Training Module Completion Certificates
Your eligibility as an approved volunteer will expire on June 30th of each academic year. All school volunteers must indicate their desire to continue as a volunteer each school year by renewing their volunteer application after July 1st of each new academic year.

Kindergarten News

Hello Kindergarten Families:
We made it through our first week of school with fun, laughter, and excitement in the kindergarten hall. We are excited that we can have volunteers back into our building this year. Please make sure that you go through PGCPS to get background check/fingerprinted, and watch the safe school videos if you are interested in being a volunteer. We are so excited to be able to provide amazing experiences to our scholars through field trips. In order to do so, we must have at least 25 chaperones who have been cleared through the county for each event. Without your support, we will be unable to provide these opportunities. If you are willing to serve as a chaperone, please complete the volunteer procedures as soon as possible. We hope to have enough certified chaperones by Sept. 9th to begin planning our first fall activity. If you have already completed the process, please send all of your information to your scholar’s teacher and Mrs. Virgil at evirgil@cmitelementary.org.
We are encouraging all families to go through this process as soon as possible so that you can get cleared to volunteer with your scholars’ class. We will also be looking for a classroom parent/parents to be a liaison and help out when needed to support activities or events. If you are interested, please reach out to your scholar's teacher.
Communication: Class Dojo is one of our main forms of communication for any classroom activities events, and messages. Please make sure that you are connected to your scholar's Class Dojo. The communication folder and/or emailing your child's teacher are other ways to stay connected as well.

2nd Grade News

We had a fantastic first week in second grade. Students were able to spend the week getting to know their teachers, each other, and classroom expectations.
Next week, we will continue to work on classroom routines. We will also begin using our curriculum. Students will still be able to access all assignments either through Google Classroom or their workbooks.
Next week, we will begin Unit 1 in reading, titled, "You Are Here." In class, we will be reading "How Many Stars in the Sky." The big question for the unit is "How do different places affect us?" Throughout the week, we will focus on realistic fiction. The weekly question is, "What can we understand about a place when we look at it closely."
The spelling pattern will be long and short vowels. In math, we will begin working on Topic 1. This topic covers fluently adding within 20.
It is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home.
Attached below is a Google Classroom Tutorial for Beginners. There are many other useful tutorials that you can find on YouTube as well.

RELA & Social Studies
Ms. Tellis
Good day Tigers! The week of 9/5/2022 is all about beginning our curriculum in RELA and Social Studies! We will delve into the skill of analyzing informational texts. Students will dissect the main ideas and details of an informational text through text evidence. Students will learn what it means to identify text evidence to support the main idea.
In Social Studies, the BIG Question of "How does geography influence how people live?" will be introduced and examined. Students will collaborate and discuss what it means to influence and how the varied geography of the United States affected the early people who lived there. Let's get ready to learn! Tigers Roar!
Mrs. Moon
This week in RELA students learned about kindness, routines, and procedures. Next week we will be beginning curriculum and homework. Students will begin reading The Path to Paper Son. We will focus on main idea and details and text evidence. In writing students will begin analyzing personal narratives. Students will focus on simple sentences and suffixes: -ic, -ism, -ive.
Math & Science Instruction

Mrs. Linton Philp
This week students are learning about place value. Place the value tells the position of a whole number and also the value of a digit depends on its place in a number. We will explore whole numbers to hundred million and decimals to thousandths. Students will learn that a digit in any place has 10 times the value it would have in the place to its right and 1/10 the value it would have in the place to its left. Expect to see work that provides practice in place value with whole numbers and decimals.
