Week of June 6-10th
|
We are in the final countdown of the school year with only 13 days left. It is hard to believe we have almost completed our kindergarten year. Though we are coming closer to the end of the year, we are busy with assessments, wrapping up our curriculum, starting first grade work, and various school events. Keep an eye on the school and class dojo messages in order to help stay informed of important information that will be coming out.
We have reached the point in the year were it is hot outside. We ask that you send water bottles to school with your scholar. It is important that they have water when they get hot so that they can stay hydrated. We have been learning how people can effect the environment, so if possible, please send reusable water bottles. This will help reinforce what they are learning in science. Make sure that names are on their bottles.
We are in full swing for all of our testing windows. We have completed MAP Reading Fluency and are working on completing the DRA assessments. Your scholar's teacher will provide more information about when they will be administering the MAP Math and MAP Reading this week. Headphones are required for MAP testing as the test reads to your scholar. Headphones do not need a microphone for these assessments. We ask that you help reinforce the importance of taking their time, staying focused, and doing their best. We also ask that you help by making sure that your scholar is well rested and has a good breakfast.
Our promotions will be occurring on June 13th and 14th. Each scholar will be provided 3 tickets for attendees. If there is a sibling within the school, or home age, they may attend without a ticket. More information about ticket distribution will be given shortly. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your scholar's teacher.
We ask that scholars wear easy to wear "Dress to Impress" clothing the day of their promotion. Keep in mind your scholar's promotion may be at 11:00.a.m. and that they have lunch at 9:50 a.m. It is in your scholar's best interest if you send them with something to wear over their dress clothing for recess and lunchtime.

Please make sure students press turn in when turning in their work in Savvas AND in Google Classroom. Please note that we follow the grading policy from PGCPS. Please look over the policy. Students are required to fill out the make-up form BEFORE attempting to redo the assignment (located in Google Classroom). Also, teachers have to approve the make-up work form before the student completes the assignment because not all assignments are eligible for resubmission. Please express to your scholar the importance of turning in their own work on time. If they have not attempted to complete the assignment and it is late, it will NOT be accepted, per the PGCPS Grading Policy. Parents will have until Wednesday to request a redo of an assignment. Resubmissions must be submitted by the following Sunday. If an assignment is not eligible for a redo, teachers will put "not eligible for redo" in the assignment description.
ClassDojo is our main form of communication. Please join your scholar’s homeroom teacher’s ClassDojo. Please check ClassDojo for any updates and new information to be shared. Lastly, please be sure to check SchoolMax for all graded assignments. Have a great week!

Next week in Reading, students will be taking MAP Reading assessment.
In Social Studies, students will continue studying the West Region.
In Math, students will be reviewing previous taught concepts in preparation for the upcoming MAP Assessment.
In Science, students should be able to explain how natural hazards can negatively affect humans and describe some solutions that reduce the impact of natural hazards.
We are strongly encouraging parents to check SchoolMax weekly to stay abreast of your student's grades in all academic areas. Students can request a redo of an assignment using the Google Form that is posted in Google Classroom. Only assignments that have been assigned or entered in SchoolMax within the last week can be redone unless noted otherwise. Please have your student complete one form for each redo request. Once the form has been submitted, your student's teacher will give out additional information. If students are granted a redo, the assignment(s) must be completed within 3 days from the date assigned.
Please remind your scholars to charge their devices nightly and to bring their chargers to school. All students should also have extra masks in their backpacks.
We are in need of disinfectant wipes and facial tissues to keep our classrooms clean and germ free. Please send in 1-2 bottles or packages with your scholar in the upcoming weeks. Thanks in advance.

No jeans, shorts, or flip-flops, please.
MAP TESTING
Scholars will complete MAP Reading on June 7th and MAP Math on June 9th.
LEARNING
Scholars will continue instruction as we wrap up fifth grade topics and introduce some sixth grade skills. This week in RELA, students focused on Rocks and Cycles. We learned about commas and semicolons, lyric poetry, main idea and details, and making connections. Next week in RELA we will begin writing our own lyric poetry, we will begin learning about the water cycle, and interpreting text features. In Math, students will use tables and given rules to learn procedures for extending two patterns. They will then solve problems that involve describing a relationship between the two patterns. In Science, students will explore how living and nonliving components of an ecosystem interact.
Students are excited as we quickly approach the end of the school year. We want to remind them to continue to exhibit behavior that follows the expectations of the Tiger's Den: Respect Others, Opt to be Scholarly, Act Responsibly and React with Kindness. Class Dojo continues to be our main form of communication. Look out for updates; please reach out to your scholar's teacher if you have any questions regarding end of the year activities.
Have a great week!

Students in kindergarten and fifth grade are diligently working on their songs for promotion - we are so excited to sing our hearts out. The end of the year will be filled with opportunities for making music and expressing musical preferences using the knowledge we’ve gained all year. Our students are well equipped to compare, analyze, and improvise along with music of many different styles and uses.
