NEW! Volunteer Application and Approval Process Information
Proceso aprobación y postulación para hacer voluntariado: https://www.pgcps.org/es/offices/compliance-and-ethics/student-safety/frequently-asked-questions-background-checks-and-volunteers Processus de candidature et d'approbation des bénévoles: https://www.pgcps.org/offices/compliance/student-safety/frequently-asked-questions-background-checks-and-volunteers/processus-de-candidature-et-dapprobation-des-benevoles In November 2020, PGCPS launched an online volunteer application and approval process. Visit www.pgcps.org/volunteer for more information on becoming a volunteer and to access the application. Follow these simple steps to get started: STEP 1 – Apply Online (Annual Requirement) ALL volunteers must complete the PGCPS online volunteer application located on the PGCPS volunteer website under the “Become a Volunteer” section and takes approximately three minutes to complete. Click here to visit the website: https://www.pgcps.org/offices/compliance/student-safety/frequently-asked-questions-background-checks-and-volunteers Your ELIGIBILITY as an approved volunteer WILL EXPIRE on June 30th of EACH academic year. All school volunteers must indicate their desire to continue as a volunteer EACH SCHOOL YEAR by RENEWING their volunteer application AFTER July 1st of EACH NEW academic year. STEP 2 – Complete Background Screening Process (One-Time Requirement) To ensure the safety of our students, PGCPS requires a fingerprint background check and Child Protective Services (CPS) clearance for each person who will provide volunteer services more than once each school year. The total fee for these clearances is $62.25 per applicant. Please note that this is a one-time requirement for all volunteers. To schedule an appointment to complete the background screening process, please visit: https://bithgroup1.schedulista.com/ CLARIFICATION: You DO NOT have to repeat STEP 2- Background Screening Process again if you already have received your background/fingerprint receipt (i.e. this school year, prior school years). STEP 2 is just part of the full volunteer process. If you have already submitted the original background/fingerprint receipt to the school previously (i.e. this school year, prior school years) and need a copy forwarded to you to upload into the CMIT NES Volunteer Form, please send Mrs. Virgil (evirgil@cmitelementary.org) an email to request it. STEP 3 – Complete Mandatory Safety Training Modules (Annual Requirement) Once you complete the online volunteer application, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your application and assigning you a unique Volunteer Identification Number (VIN). Approximately 48 hours after your application is submitted, you will receive an email with a link to log in and complete the required training modules via the Vector Solutions (formerly SafeSchools) platform. You must use your VIN as your username and password to login and complete the required training modules. You are required to complete these modules annually. The mandatory training modules for volunteers can be located at the following web address: https://pgcpsvolunteers-md.safeschools.com/login ONCE YOU HAVE RECEIVED confirmation of APPROVAL to serve as a volunteer, COMPLETED the fingerprint background check and CPS clearance process, and have COMPLETED the Vector Solutions (formerly SafeSchools) safety training modules, please utilize this CMIT NES Volunteer SY 2021-22 Form https://forms.gle/6viB7NMJp3XY32z96 to upload the following: 1. Email from PGCPS titled Volunteer Application APPROVED (PDF format) 2. Background Fingerprint Receipt (PDF format) 3. Safety Training Module Completion Certificates (PDF format) Questions? If you have any questions or need help, you should access the following contacts for support: CPS Clearance Checks (301) 780-2191 hr.customerservice@pgcps.org Fingerprint Background Check (301) 952-7831 hr.backgroundunit@pgcps.org SafeSchools Training Modules (301) 952-6774 safeschools.training@pgcps.org

2nd Grade News
We had a great week in Second Grade!! This week we will continue Unit 3 in reading, titled, "Making a Difference." The big question for the unit is "Why is it important to connect with other people?" Throughout the week, we will focus on Realistic Fiction. The weekly question is, "What can people do to make a difference in their communities?" The spelling pattern will be Suffixes -ly, -ful, -er, -less, -or. In Math, we will be working on topic 12. This topic covers measuring length. Updates: Since we are working with measurement, if your child has a ruler he/she would like to bring in for the unit, they may. It is HIGHLY recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. https://toytheater.com/math-flash-cards/ If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo. Have a great weekend! We will see everyone on Monday!

Welcome to the second week of May! In Math, students will be reviewing skills from topics 1-13. In Science, students will continue with Lesson 3: Traits Influenced by the Environment. In Health, students will continue learning about perseverance. In oral/reading, students will be reviewing skills from Units 1-4. Please have students get to school before 7:55 am. That way, they can get their breakfast (if they eat at school), and get set up for testing. Thank you for all of your support throughout this school year! We have worked very hard to get to this moment. Please remind students of the importance of getting a good nights rest the night before testing. Please make sure students press turn in when turning in their work in Savvas AND in Google Classroom. Please note that we follow the grading policy from PGCPS. Please look over the policy. Students are required to fill out the make-up form BEFORE attempting to redo the assignment (located in Google Classroom). Also, teachers have to approve the redo assignment before they complete the work because not all assignments are eligible for make-up. Please express to your scholar the importance of turning in their own work on time. If they have not attempted to complete the assignment and it is late, it will NOT be accepted, per the PGCPS Grading Policy. Parents will have until Wednesday to request a redo of an assignment. Resubmissions must be submitted by the following Sunday. If an assignment is not eligible for a redo, teachers will put "not eligible for redo" in the assignment description. Class Dojo is our main form of communication. Please join your scholar’s homeroom teacher’s ClassDojo. Please check ClassDojo for any updates and new information to be shared. Lastly, please be sure to check SchoolMax for all graded assignments. Have a great week! Third Grade Team Honor Roll Assembly- Monday, 5/9 @ 9:30 a.m. 3 Hour Early Dismissal- Friday 5/13

Please ensure your scholar's device is fully charged before coming to school, he/she receives a good night's rest and have a well balanced breakfast to ensure he/she does well during testing. We are strongly encouraging parents to check SchoolMax weekly to stay abreast of your student's grades in all academic areas. Students can request a redo of an assignment using the Google Form that is posted in Google Classroom. Only assignments that have been assigned or entered in SchoolMax within the last week can be redone unless noted otherwise. Please have your student complete one form for each redo request. Once the form has been submitted, your student's teacher will give out additional information. If students are granted a redo, the assignment(s) must be completed within 3 days from the date assigned. Please remind your scholars to charge their devices nightly and to bring their chargers to school. All students should also have extra masks in their backpacks. We are in need of disinfectant wipes and facial tissues to keep our classrooms clean and germ free. Please consider sending in 1-2 bottles or packages with your scholar in the upcoming weeks. Music Students in grades 4 and 5 have been working tirelessly on their Shark Tank products and have finally gotten the chance to present this week! Students created fictional products, and wrote background music, a jingle, and an advertising/pitch for their product to try and persuade their classmates to invest. I am so proud of their teamwork! Students in grade 3 are classifying instruments using scientific terms instead of westernized instrument families in order to include instruments from around the world. Grades K-2 are studying the elements of music - form, rhythm, melody, and duration - in order to create their own music.
