Week of May 2-6th
Welcome May! We have completed another month of school and are in the final stretch. It is hard to believe, but there are only 37 days of school left. We are starting to focus in on first grade skills and solidifying what we have been learning in kindergarten. As the weather is starting to warm up, we ask that you send your scholar with a reusable plastic bottle. They may fill them up at the water fountain. It is important that your scholar stays hydrated. Make sure that water bottles are labeled. We have been enjoying watching our caterpillars in their journey to becoming butterflies. All four classrooms now have chrysalis to observer. We can not wait to see what happens next in their journey. 2nd Grade News
We had a great week in Second Grade!! This week we will continue Unit 3 in reading, titled, "Making a Difference." The big question for the unit is "Why is it important to connect with other people?" Throughout the week, we will focus on Realistic Fiction. The weekly question is, "What can people do to make a difference in their communities?" The spelling pattern will be Suffixes -ly, -ful, -er, -less, -or. In Math, we will be working on topic 12. This topic covers measuring length. Updates: Since we are working with measurement, if your child has a ruler he/she would like to bring in for the unit, they may. It is HIGHLY recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. https://toytheater.com/math-flash-cards/ If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo. Have a great weekend! We will see everyone on Monday!

Roses are red. April is grey. But starting this week, it's gonna be May!
Welcome to the first week of May! In Math, students will continue Topic 13: Fraction Equivalence and Comparison. The review for Topic 13 will be on Wednesday, 5/4. The test for Topic 13 will be Thursday, 5/5. The pre-test for Topic 14: Solve Time, Capacity, and Mass Problems will be Friday, 5/6. In Science, students will continue Topic 5: Life Cycles. Lesson 2 covers Inherited Traits. Lesson 3 covers Influenced by the Environment. In Health, they will discuss perseverance. This is a great topic to discuss with your scholar(s) before end of year testing begins. In Reading, they will review the Unit 4 study guide. The test for Unit 4 will be held on Friday, 5/6. No new spelling words will be given this week. In Social Studies, students will continue with Chapter 6, Lesson 2: A New Home in America. This quiz will be on Wednesday, 5/4. Lesson 3: A New Ways to Communicate will begin on Wednesday, 5/4. The quiz will be held on Friday, 5/6. Please make sure students press turn in when turning in their work in Savvas AND in Google Classroom. Please note that we follow the grading policy from PGCPS. Please look over the policy. Students are required to fill out the make-up form BEFORE attempting to redo the assignment (located in Google Classroom). Also, teachers have to approve the student redo before they do the assignment because not all assignments are eligible for make-up. Please express to your scholar the importance of turning in their own work on time. If they have not attempted to complete the assignment and it is late, it will NOT be accepted, per the PGCPS Grading Policy. Parents will have until Wednesday to request a redo of an assignment. Resubmissions must be submitted by the following Sunday. If an assignment is not eligible for a redo, teachers will put "not eligible for redo" in the assignment description. Class Dojo is our main form of communication. Please join your scholar’s homeroom teacher’s Class Dojo. Please check Class Dojo for any updates and new information to be shared. Lastly, please be sure to check School Max for all graded assignments. Have a great week! Third Grade Team No School- Tuesday 5/3 Book Fair Week Teacher Appreciation Week

What's Happening in Fourth Grade
Next week in Reading, students will be explaining elements of drama. In Social Studies, students will study Southwestern land, water & climate. In Math, students will be finishing up chapter 15, Geometric measurement and angles. We will be starting topic 16 which is Lines, Angles, and Shapes. Map testing results show that most students need additional practice in geometry. Please take some time to work with your scholar to reinforce what is taught in class. IXL is a great resource to use to help master geometry skills. In Science, students will be able to describe how weather hazards can affect humans. We are strongly encouraging parents to check SchoolMax weekly to stay abreast of your student's grades in all academic areas. Students can request a redo of an assignment using the Google Form that is posted in Google Classroom. Only assignments that have been assigned or entered in SchoolMax within the last week can be redone unless noted otherwise. Please have your student complete one form for each redo request. Once the form has been submitted, your student's teacher will give out additional information. If students are granted a redo, the assignment(s) must be completed within 3 days from the date assigned. Please remind your scholars to charge their devices nightly and to bring their chargers to school. All students should also have extra masks in their backpacks. We are in need of disinfectant wipes and facial tissues to keep our classrooms clean and germ free. Please consider sending in 1-2 bottles or packages with your scholar in the upcoming weeks. Thanks in advance. Let's have a great week on purpose!!

Fifth Grade Newsletter
Greeting Parents! This week in REAL we have begun Unit 4 Week 4. Students are practicing the skills of generating questions and explaining relationships between ideas. We are still working on Science Fiction writing. Our grammar skills are greek roots and correlative conjunctions. This week students are evaluating and analyzing the effects of civil behavior. The Civil Rights movement, segregation, Jim Crow laws, Women's rights, World War and reformation. Students are learning how one’s actions impacts those around them. They are learning how the government makes laws that civilians agree with or disagrees with. It’s an interesting and knowledgeable adventure! This week in math, your student is continuing to develop his or her understanding of customary and metric units of length, capacity, weight, and mass. This topic focuses on converting among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system, as well as converting among units of time. Your student will use this understanding in solving multi-step and real-world problems. In science, students have wrapped up Topic 5 where we discussed how humans impact the Earth, and how the effects are both negative and beneficial for humans and other animals. We have begun exploring food and energy, and how it relates to energy from the sun.

Music Students in grades 4 and 5 have been working tirelessly on their Shark Tank products and have finally gotten the chance to present this week! Students created fictional products, and wrote background music, a jingle, and an advertising/pitch for their product to try and persuade their classmates to invest. I am so proud of their teamwork! Students in grade 3 are classifying instruments using scientific terms instead of westernized instrument families in order to include instruments from around the world. Grades K-2 are studying the elements of music - form, rhythm, melody, and duration - in order to create their own music. Ms. Bautch- Music Greetings, K-1 practiced: Meaning of Online: The Curious Crystals In this engaging animated video, Pearl and Rocki are led to a mysterious machine in the forest that grants them access to the internet. 2-5 practiced: Internet Usage: Browsing and URLs During this engaging and interactive digital lesson, the learners will receive direct instruction and practice with Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) as they identify URL components, use URLs to navigate to a web page, and use a browser to find and view information online. Mrs. Avsar- Technology Spanish Greetings parents, This week students worked in pairs to complete worksheets and dialogue exercises about Sentimientos. Next week will be a review week. Mrs. Bryant Greetings, Tigers are being encouraged to focus on their craftsmanship and presentation as they finish their projects and create video artist statements, Tigers have done well with their reflections. We will be including more reviews, critiques, and artist statements for the older grades. The younger grades will be focusing their attention on coloring techniques. Thank you, Mr. Dorsey Art Greetings, This week we did a mock pacer test to prepare the upper grade levels for what’s to come in middle school, and to give the younger students a chance to show what they are capable of accomplishing!
