Students are required to fill out the make-up form BEFORE attempting to redo the assignment (located in Google Classroom). Also, teachers have to approve the student before they do the assignment because not all assignments are eligible for make-up. Please express to your scholar the importance of turning in their own work on time. If they have not attempted to complete the assignment and it is late, it will NOT be accepted, per the PGCPS Grading Policy. Parents will have until Wednesday to request a redo of an assignment. Resubmissions must be submitted by the following Sunday. If an assignment is not eligible for a redo, teachers will put "not eligible for redo" in the assignment description. Class Dojo is our main form of communication. Please join your scholar’s homeroom teacher’s Class Dojo. Please check Class Dojo for any updates and new information to be shared. What's Happening in Fourth Grade
We have reached the half way point in Quarter 3. Please continue to encourage your scholar to stay on task, complete assignments in a timely manner and ask/ answer questions in class. Let's end Quarter 3 strong! Next week in Reading, students will be finishing up Unit 3 Week 4 and beginning our Poetry Study. In Social Studies, students will finish Chapter 6 The Southeast Region and begin Chapter 7 The Midwest Region. In Math, students will be using fractions or decimals to solve word problems. In Science, students will be able to describe how rocks and soil form and identify the properties of minerals. We are strongly encouraging parents to check SchoolMax weekly to stay abreast of your student's grades in all academic areas. Students can request a re-do of an assignment using the Google Form that is posted in Google Classroom. Only assignments that have been assigned or entered in SchoolMax within the last week can be redone unless noted otherwise. Please have your student complete one form for each redo request. Once the form has been submitted, your student's teacher will give out additional information. If students are granted a redo, the assignment(s) must be completed within 3 days from the date assigned. Please remind your scholars to charge their devices nightly and to bring their chargers to school. All students should also have extra masks in their backpacks. We are in need of disinfectant wipes to keep our classrooms clean and germ free. Please consider sending in 1-2 bottles or packages with your scholar in the upcoming weeks. Thanks in advance. Let's have a great week on purpose!!

Spring Forward with Fifth Grade
Greetings Parents! We are moving steadily through fractions, and next week we are finishing up dividing fractions. Students will read multi-step division problems to identify how the steps are connected. Some problems can be solved by first finding and solving one or more sub-problems and then using the answers to solve the original problem. Friday March 18th, students will be given a test on the topic to determine if the concept of dividing fractions has been mastered. This week students were introduced to the concept of how humans impact Earth in positive or negative ways. Next week students will discuss how natural resources are obtained and used. Students will use Claim-Evidence-Reasoning to explain how humans use energy that we get from Earth. The MISA (Maryland Integrated Science Assessment) testing will begin on March 17th and March 18th. This week, we focused on inferring multiple themes in one text. In spelling, we reviewed words with syllable patterns. Our grammar skill was be adverbs. Next week, we will be taking the progress check. We will be reviewing Chapter 3 skills and taking the Unit 3 Assessment. We have begun a Women’s History Month Project where students will work in groups to create a song, commercial, or speech about a women’s contribution to STEAM. Please encourage your students to read at home during their free time. The adventure in learning the concepts of the Civil War and how migration impacted our society is beautifully unfolding. Many students have had deep concerns and have asked great questions as to how our society functions as a whole with the impact of separation and segregation. Students have been vested in learning and expanding their minds on the great story of our nation. It is truly a play by play book that is still continuing as we speak. This week they will continue the saga of Chapter 10 and expanding west. They will also be connecting to the immigration and the industry processes of our states. It’s a great adventure of learning how our society has functioned and is functioning. We're slowly getting a glimpse of spring, and we understand the constantly changing temperatures can wreak havoc causing colds, allergy or sinus flare ups. We want to continue to be diligent by sanitizing after each class, having hand sanitizer on hand, and having scheduled restroom breaks, along with the other precautions in the classroom. Spring is also testing season! Fifth graders are tested statewide in English Language Arts, Math, and Science. Please mark your calendars for March 16th at 6pm where we will review the MCAP and MISA and share how you can help your scholar at home. If you have any questions, reach out to your scholar's teacher. More information will be sent out next week!

Have a great week! Your Fifth Grade Team
