We had a terrific thirteenth week after a much needed break in Second Grade!
Next week, we will continue Unit 2 in reading, titled, "Nature’s Wonders." The big question for the unit is "What patterns do we see in nature?" Throughout the week, we will focus on realistic fiction. The weekly question is, "How does a tree show patterns as seasons change?" The spelling pattern will be Vowel Digraph ie. In Math, we will continue topic 6. This topic covers subtracting fluently within 100 using strategies.

In Reading, they will take their quiz on Monday, 12/13. They will be on Unit 2: Week 4, which introduces them to persuasive text. They will focus on identifying words with syllable VCe patterns.

Please make sure students press turn in when turning in their work in Saavas AND in google Classroom. Please note that we follow the grading policy from PGCPS. Please look over the policy. Students are required to fill out the make-up form BEFORE attempting to redo the assignment (located in google Classroom). Also, teachers have to approve the student before they do the assignment because not all assignments are eligible for make-up. Please express to your scholar the importance of turning in their own work on time. If they have not attempted to complete the assignment and it is late, it will NOT be accepted, per the PGCPS Grading Policy. Parents will have until Wednesday to request a redo of an assignment. Resubmissions must be submitted by the following Sunday. If an assignment is not eligible for a redo, teachers will put "not eligible for redo" in the assignment description.
Class Dojo is our main form of communication. Please join your scholar’s homeroom teacher’s Class Dojo. Please check Class Dojo for any updates and new information to be shared. If you would rather use email as your main form of communication, please tell your scholar’s teacher. Lastly, please be sure to check SchoolMax for all graded assignments. All students should be bringing their school devices with them to school daily. Have a great week!

Fifth Grade Newsletter

Greetings Parents!
Scholars have been tirelessly working on Science concepts of the Earth’s systems (hydrosphere, biosphere, atmosphere and geosphere). All students completed the Science Benchmark and many have completed the Topic 3 Assessment, which will continue next week for those who were not able to complete it. We will then begin Patterns in Space - Topic 7 as we continue learning Earth Science. We will also implement more writing during Science
In Math, Mathematicians completed Topic 4 by taking the End of topic assessment. We then completed the Savvas Benchmark assessment for Topics 1-4. Students assessed their background knowledge of dividing multi-digit numbers by 1-digit and were introduced to dividing multi-digit numbers by a 2-digit divisor. Next week we will continue practicing division and apply strategies such as partial quotients and area models to divide.
In RELA this week, we began Unit 2 Week 3. While reading Hatchet, focused on r-controlled vowels, irregular verbs, point of view, and generating questions about a text. Our writing centered around informational article writing. Next week, we will complete Unit 2 Week 3.
This week we have been delving deep into The American Revolution and the road to battle during Social Studies. We have learned how the British Army was much more powerful than the Continental Army and how they were preparing for a battle they had never experienced but were willing to fight for their independence, no matter what! This lesson is teaching perseverance, unity, tenacity, and taking authority over what is valuable and precious.
Scholars have been highly involved and connected to the lessons with great strides and great motivation! Let's go scholars!!!
