Week of February 8th
We are in full swing for winter MAP testing. This week we will be taking the reading MAP on Tuesday, Feb. 9th during reading. We will start the assessment following morning announcements, around 8:20am. Make sure that you are logged in on time and are available to help your scholar log into the assessment. Scholars are to take this assessment on their own in order for us to evaluate the growth they have made so far this year. We also use this assessment to gather data and discover what areas in which we need to focus on to help scholars grow. Remind your scholars that this is an adaptive test and to do their best. If you see your scholar starting to become frustrated reach out to the teacher and let them know, we can pause their assessment in order for them to take a break. We are aware that there are a few assessments this week, so we are going to do a spirit week to help brighten the students week. Send photos of your scholars in their spirit week attire to their teacher in order to be posted and shared on Dojo. We had another fantastic week in Second Grade! Students did an amazing job completing their MAP Reading Fluency assessments. Next week in Reading, we will continue Unit 3: Our Traditions. The big question for the unit is "What makes a tradition?" The question of the week is "How can a traditional story be told in different ways?" Throughout the week, we will focus on folktales. The spelling pattern will be r-Controlled Vowels: er, ir, ur. In Math, we will begin Topic 6. This topic covers fluently subtracting within 100. As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. Next week, students will be taking their MAP Reading and Math tests. Please be on the lookout for more information from your child's teacher. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo. Have a terrific weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

Creative Arts Info/Updates
Welcome to the 3rd quarter and 2nd semester! We have had a tremendously fun and engaging 1st semester; we look forward to teaching some new things with a few new strategies or techniques. Media: Kindergarten and 1st grade: Students will continue to listen to a series with E-books. During the lesson, students will predict and recite details about the main idea, plot, and characters. 2nd and 3rd grade: Students will recall facts of a story using an E-book series to answer comprehension questions. 4th and 5th Grade: In recognition of Black history, students will discuss a prominent African- American figure using current events to determine a theme of a text and how the speaker reflects upon a topic. Encourage students to read for 15 - 30 minutes 3-4 times a week and ask them questions about what they are reading. “[My] Books are like puppies and children: you love each one for different reasons. I don’t actually have a favorite because, if I were honest, I’m always more excited about what is coming.” - Nikki Giovanni Spanish: Buenas, this week we are going to introduce a new theme: Los transportes. We will read the words in context and students will participate in conversations about different means of transportation. As a written assignment, students will create a Google Slide presentation in which they will write 9 sentences about different means of transportation. Have a nice week! Lego: Hi, K-2nd grade students will build their lego model then explain the reasoning behind the model that he or she has built. 3-5th grade students will continue using variables. Students will: -Deepen their understanding of how to use variables and return values. - Complete challenges 41-45. Tech: Greetings, 3-5 practiced: Visual Mapping: Attributes and Linking During this engaging and interactive digital lesson, the learners receive direct instruction and practice with visual mapping software as they enhance text using bold, italics, and underlining, modify arrow attributes and adjust elements of style, color, and size for the background and clip art. K-2 practiced: Computer Fundamentals: Selecting Multiple Objects In this engaging and interactive digital lesson, the learners receive direct instruction and practice using a mouse and a trackpad to select multiple objects at the same time. Music: 4th and 5th graders are entering the TWO WEEK STRETCH for submitting their final DAW Bandlab project! These have been turning out AMAZING. I am so proud of the tech skills these tigers have displayed in this unit. Grades 2 and 3 are exploring the contributions of Black musicians across ALL genres. They will get to pick their favorite genre or artist and learn more about them individually. First grade: I am SO impressed with your instrument projects! Amazing work! If you still have not submitted your Flipgrid video showing off your project, don't forget to do so. Thank you to all of the grownups and siblings that helped these scholars plan and build homemade instruments. Art: Hello Parents, Moving forward for the third and fourth quarter, updates may be sent through ClassDojo when a Visual Arts assignment is not posted in their pallets by the end of class. If you receive a notice, the scholar has two weeks to submit the referenced assignment from the due date. ClassDojo is the preferred form of communication. Please, have your scholar post the missing assignment, labeled with their first and last name and notify me in Class Dojo, to receive credit. I will respond with a confirmation, after reviewing and updating SchoolMax. Late assignments may receive a 10-point deduction. Late assignments will not be accepted after the two-week period. If the assignment has been posted but not graded, send a message through ClassDojo for an update. Please refer to SchoolMax to view which assignments have not been received or graded. Please contact Ms. Love (wlove@cmitelementary.org) or Mrs. Virgil (evirgil@cmitelementary.org) if you have issues accessing SchoolMAX. Phys. Ed: We will continue to work on jumping skills and practice the skills to help us improve for next year with jumping rope. Students will get their first Google Classroom assignment on Tuesday, but are not required to complete it until after they have had PE with Mr. Hamms next week. Have a great weekend/week!
