Welcome to Quarter 3
We are officially in quarter 3. During this time of year, the teachers start to ask the students to work on, try, and complete more difficult tasks. We ask that you allow your scholars to continue to work independently and do their work on their own. We understand that the work may be difficult at times, however; what we are asking will help your scholars learn and develop new skills. These skills will be needed not only in first grade, but throughout their educational endeavors. It is important that you check your scholar's Dojos for messages and class stories in order to stay informed with what is going on within the class and school. It is that time of year for the winter MAP assessments. We will be giving the MAP M (math) on Thursday, Feb. 4th during the math block. Make sure that you are logged into class on time. The assessment is adaptive and will change based on your scholar's answers. This allows for the assessment to become easier or more challenging based on your scholar's needs. Your scholars are not to receive assistance as we need the correct data in order to help guide us in lessons geared for student needs. We have officially kicked off Black History Month. There will be activities that occur through out the month starting this week. On Thursday, Feb. 4, all kindergarten classes will join Ms. Barton's Zoom at 9:00am for a read a loud from an African American author. Grubs with grandparents will be held on Friday, Feb. 5th from 9:00am to 9:55am. If you are interested, look for information sent out by the PTO. The week of February 8th, we will have spirit week. We had a great week completing our Kindness Challenges! Next week in Reading, we will continue Unit 3: Our Traditions. The big question for the unit is "What makes a tradition?" The question of the week is "What stories do people tell to understand the world around them?" Throughout the week, we will focus on legends. The spelling pattern will be comparative endings. In Math, we will continue Topic 5. This topic covers subtracting within 100 using strategies. As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo. Have a terrific weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

BHM Read Aloud!
Hello Tigers Den! We would LOVE to have you come to share a story that celebrates Black History Month by reading it aloud to our Tigers! Please contact your Grade Level Liaison with: the book title you would like to read, a day of the week/time that works best for you, and a preferred classroom if you have one. If you are willing to read to multiple classes, please say so! We would love to have our parents visit as many rooms as possible! If your grade level has multiple Liaisons, you can pick any to contact! If your grade level does not have a Liaison, you can contact anyone from the list!

Tech: Greetings, 2-5 practiced: Visual Mapping: Groups and Labels The learners represent thoughts and organized ideas through the use of clip art, text, labeled objects, and the link tool in visual mapping software as they receive direct instruction and practice in this engaging and interactive digital lesson. K-1 practiced: Computer Fundamentals: Intro to Pointer Devices In this engaging and interactive digital lesson, the learners receive direct instruction and practice using a mouse and a trackpad to select objects. Media: Kindergarten and 1st grade: Students will review answers to their assignment and listen to a story to predict and recite details about the main idea. 2nd and 3rd grade: Students will review answers to their assignment and will review the details of a story using an E-book series. 4th and 5th Grade: Students compare and contrast parts of an online news article with a paper article. Next week, we will learn about determining the validity of an article. Encourage students to read for 15-30 minutes 3-4 times a week and ask them questions about what they are reading. “[My] Books are like puppies and children: you love each one for different reasons. I don’t actually have a favorite because, if I were honest, I’m always more excited about what is coming.” Lego: K-2nd grade students will build their lego model and then explain the reasoning behind the model that he or she has built. Next week, our topic will be "Animals." 3-5th grade students will continue using variables. Variables are a very useful tool for programmers, and it is very important that students understand how to use them. Alongside variables, we will learn how to use the “distanceTo” function . They will complete challenges 35-40 on Codemonkey. Music: Tiger musicians have been doing some AMAZING things lately! Grades 4 and 5 are finishing up their Digital Audio Workspace (DAW) unit by creating a final song project. I'm so impressed by their musicianship and tech skills that they've displayed during this unit. 1ST GRADE is building their homemade instrument projects NEXT WEEK, FEB 2nd and 4th DURING MUSIC CLASS! Every first grade guardian should have a dojo message from Ms. Bautch explaining what this project is about, and what items found around the house could be useful. No families reached out for extra craft supply pickup from Ms. Bautch, so she is assuming that every scholar has found something around the house or at the store to use for this project. Photos and flipgrid videos will be submitted for this project. Physical Education: All students will be moving to jumping and landing skills for the first two weeks of February and they will also have 2 Google Classroom assessments (1 for each week). The last two weeks of the month we will talk about fitness knowledge (K-1 will focus on the heart, 2-5 will focus on how to build strength and health-related fitness/family fitness activities). Students will need space not near a table or chairs to avoid injury and to ensure that they are able to move with the class easier. 2nd Quarter grades have been submitted by the creative arts team this week and we look forward to another fun filled 3rd quarter with your scholars at home, but hopefully soon maybe in person, but we will see.
