2nd Grade News
We had STEM-tastic week in second grade! We are so proud of all the second grade scientists and their STEM Fair Projects!!! Next week in Reading, we will continue Unit 3: Our Traditions. The big question for the unit is "What makes a tradition?" The question of the week is "What stories do people tell to understand the world around them?" Throughout the week, we will focus on legends. The spelling pattern will be comparative endings. In Math, we will continue Topic 5. This topic covers subtracting within 100 using strategies. As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. STEM Fair projects are due 1/19/2021. This is a required project! If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo. Have a terrific weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

What's Happening in Third Grade
As the quarter is coming to an end next week, we want to encourage parents to continue to check SchoolMax to get an idea of where your scholar stands in all of his/her classes. Use this as a conversation piece to discuss how he/she can improve in different subject areas, which areas he/she is struggling with and so forth. Allowing your scholar to be reflective on his/her progress is a great way for him/her to be in control of his/her learning. Next week in Math, scholars will continue studying equivalent fractions. In Science, scholars will continue Weather/Clouds and finish up STEM Fair Project presentations. In Reading, scholars will study features of an informational text. In Social Studies, we will continue with Chapter 3 Communities Build a Nation. We just want to share with families that Class Dojo is our main communication platform to share information with families quickly. Please check Class Dojo daily for any updates and new information shared. Have an awesome week... on purpose!! Upcoming Dates 1/27/2021 Quarter 2 ends 1/28/2021 2 Hour Early Dismissal

END OF QUARTER 2!
In RELA this week, we finished comparing the texts "The Weird and Wonderful Echidna" and "The Very Peculiar Platypus." We used these informational texts to synthesize information and finished by completing the Progress Check assessment. We began to analyze Character Traits in realistic fiction, we will continue with this skill next week. We will take our Progress Check on Friday Jan 29th. Social Studies- This week in Social Studies, we completed a lesson about Plagiarism and introduced our unit about the NorthEast Region of the United States. Next week, we will continue to explore the characteristics, land features, and natural resources of the NorthEast USA. Math - We will continue topic 8 discussing fraction equivalence. Students have a very robust notebook for this topic with a number of anchor charts and manipulatives to allow for greater conceptual understanding. One great manipulative site is: https://apps.mathlearningcenter.org/fractions/ and another is https://toytheater.com/fraction-bars/ Please encourage your scholar to take full advantage of the resources available to them as they are working on problems involving fractions. Science Fair projects were due on January 19th. This last week we have presented them in class and scholars got the chance to teach their peers about what they learned. We are very proud of all of our scholars! Next week we will be dusting off our SAVVAS text books and coming back to our curriculum. (We get to talk about Mrs. Esbin's FAVORITE TOPIC! rocks!)

The GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE!
January 25 - January 29 is KINDNESS WEEK! This year, CMIT-N-ES is going to be participating in a worldwide initiative to spread kindness and change the vibration of our planet :) Now more than ever we need to come together and unite through acts of kindness. Being at a physical distance from one another for so long has impacted us all greatly, and without intervention (purposeful decision making and intention action) it can have a long-term social and emotional impact. So we are going to make choices to change that trajectory and come together, instead! We are going to participate in the school edition for the week, where each Tiger has the checklist of activities and sees how many genuine acts of kindness they are able to send out into the world in the week. If you want to take it a set further, there is also a family edition! (https://thegreatkindnesschallenge.com/familyedition) Please let me know if your families participate and complete the list as we will be celebrating all of these wonderful efforts! Remember: These Tigers are the future, so let's be sure it is built on a foundation where kindness and empathy is valued!

Here are some great ideas for ensuring the recognition of and energies in favor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy are not focused on one day only. Our future is looking to us for guidance and education: https://www.pbssocal.org/education/at-home-learning/seven-ways-honor-dr-martin-luther-king-jr-s-legacy-children/

I recognize that this says it is for our 12-18 year old Tigers, but! I had to share so that you could have access for older siblings in the home, AND/OR so that you could sign up if you felt comfortable for your 5th grade Tiger. Perhaps with some parent participation alongside your 5th grader, the experience will be even richer! https://mailchi.mp/investineducation/m58scen8ka-998323?e=4d5ffc2c7f

Creative Arts Info/Updates
All specials/creative arts work will need to be turned in prior to Wednesday due to the quarter 2 grades needing to be inputted next week. Go Bills!!!!!!! Physical Education: Students will continue to work and learn about nutrition, healthy eating, physical activity balance, and why hydration is important to our health. There is a Google Classroom assignment for week 19 as well that students will need to complete. Music: We're starting to have some freedom with our own creations in music class! Kindergarten is still working through their instrument families unit. FIRST GRADE PARENTS: please be aware that students will be asked to create an instrument out of household/craft items over the next few weeks. We are in the brainstorming stage this week, and they will be planning next week to narrow down what materials they need to find around the house or ask a grownup to help them buy. I will send out detailed lists with ideas to do this from home, or what low cost items could help your student build the instrument they're planning. Second and third graders are reviewing their solfege syllables and where they fall on a staff. They will be using web based apps to compose short pieces using these notes. Fourth and fifth graders voted this week on their project for Bandlab! We will begin our three week project work on 1/18. Music: Kindergarten and 1st grade: Using E-books, students will predict events and recite details about the main idea of a story. 2nd and 3rd grade: Students will determine the main idea, problem, solution, and predict events in a story using an E-book series. 4th and 5th Grade: Students will use previous knowledge to independently identify parts of an online news article and determine the author's purpose of the article. Encourage students to read for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. “There are many little ways to enlarge your world. Love of books is the best of all.” – Jacqueline Kennedy. Tech: 3-5 practiced: Tynker Coding- Space Cadet This course uses simple code blocks to introduce computational thinking and computer science basics. Students learn by connecting code blocks and apply constructs such as loops and conditional logic to create algorithms that solve problems. K-2 practiced: Introduction to Computer Fundamentals In this engaging animated video, Ollie the Owl gives an overview of the importance of staying safe online and logging out of the computer to protect your information. Lego: K-2nd grade students will build their lego model then they explain the reasoning behind the model that he or she has built. Next week, our topic will be "Respect". 3-5th grade students will continue using variables. Variables are a very useful tool for programmers, and it is very important that students understand how to use them. Alongside variables, we will learn how to use the “distanceTo” function . They will complete challenges 36-38 on Codemonkey. Spanish: Buenas, I hope everything is well. This week we are going to continue with the topic of the farm animals. We will learn how they move. We will practice this topic with different activities in which it will be included: reading, listening and writing about different animals and its colors. Please check on SchoolMax for uncompleted assignments. Have a great week! Art: Greetings, I would like to thank the Parents and Tigers that have submitted their past due assignments. The second quarter will be finishing up very soon. Please refer to SchoolMax to confirm which of your assignments have not been received and graded. Please, post all of the missing 2nd quarter assignment(s) and send screenshots/pictures (using Class Dojo) of the posts with the Padlet date included in the pic. I will review and update SchoolMax. Google Classroom is only used to house the Padlet links for each class session. Scholars have been instructed to post their assignments with their full name in the padlets for credit. Assignments can be identified by their Padlet links which list the homeroom teacher and class date. Within the Padlet page, you will find the assignments, instructions, and references for that class period. A posting of the scholar’s work for that day, is due at the end of class. Have a great weekend!
