2nd Grade News
We had another great week in second grade! Next week in Reading, we will begin Unit 3: Our Traditions. The big question for the unit is "What makes a tradition?" The question of the week is "What lessons can we learn from traditional tales?" Throughout the week, we will focus on fables. The spelling pattern will be Long i: i, ie, i_e, igh, y. In Math, we will begin Topic 5. This topic covers subtracting within 100 using strategies. As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. STEM Fair projects are due 1/19/2021. This is a required project! If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo. Have a terrific weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

What's Happening in Third Grade
We would like to thank everyone that came out on Wednesday to learn about different activities you can do with your scholar off the screen in Reading and Math. If you missed the presentation, a recording was uploaded to ClassDojo for your viewing. Check it out! Just a friendly reminder to check SchoolMax weekly for your scholar's current standings in all of their classes. Encourage your scholar to stay on top of their assignments and complete their work in a timely manner. It is very easy to fall behind and we want to ensure that all scholars are successful. As a reminder, scholars will have an opportunity to resubmit assignments to improve their grade. Weekly grades will be entered by Sunday at midnight. Parents will have until Wednesday to request a redo of an assignment. Resubmissions must be submitted by the following Sunday. If an assignment is not eligible for a redo, teachers will put "not eligible for redo" in the assignment description. Next week in Math, scholars will take their assessment for Topic 3 Fractions and begin equivalent fractions on 1/21/2021. In Science, scholars will continue Weather/ Clouds. In Reading, scholars will compare characteristics in an informational text. In Social Studies, we will continue with Chapter 3 Communities Build a Nation. We just want to share with families that Class Dojo is our main communication platform to share information with families quickly. Please check Class Dojo daily for any updates and new information shared. Students should also be working on their STEM Fair Project and Research Paper. Both are due on January 19, 2021. We will not be accepting any late projects or papers. Have an awesome week... on purpose!! Upcoming Dates 1/19/2021 STEM Fair Project and Research Paper are due 1/27/2021 End of Quarter 2

ROARING Through January!
Please note that the last day of the Second Marking Period is the 27th. No assignments may be redone from 25-29th. In RELA this week, we began comparing the texts "The Weird and Wonderful Echidna" and "The Very Peculiar Platypus." We began to use these informational texts to synthesize information. Next week, we will finish by completing the Progress Check assessment. We will then be moving forward to analyzing Character Traits in realistic fiction. In Social Studies this week, we reviewed and took our assessment for Chapter 4, which covered global economy. Next week, we will begin Chapter 5 in which we will learn all about the NorthEast USA and its natural resources and landforms. In Math, we have finished our chapter on division and we are starting Topic 8, Equivalent Fractions. Many students struggle with fractions which is why their notebook for this chapter has a number of anchor charts and resources to help them with their understanding. There are 2 excellent virtual manipulative websites that students can/should use. The first is https://apps.mathlearningcenter.org/fractions/ and the other is https://toytheater.com/fraction-bars/ STEM FAIR DEADLINES ARE RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! **Remember to look at your STEM fair packet** Scholars will submit 2 final products. They will submit the RESEARCH PAPER TO THEIR RELA TEACHER. They will turn in the STEM FAIR VIDEO that explains all of the information they would have put on a poster board last year in the video. The video must be 3 - 10 minutes long including all components and have the child in the presentation. They must be in the images doing the experiment or in a video explanation on what they did. The scholar’s voice should explain the project, what they did, how, and why, using the format given in the STEM fair packet. We are very excited to see what our scholars come up with! Review the explanation video from Mrs. Esbin’s presentation for Parent’s night in November: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1ZdazBoZ-NpI4MQneXQDVum-PDx6S7gKoz8gZJsLPSwM/preview?rm=minimal Example of final Video presentation: https://youtu.be/e3FlKgV36fg
