As we begin approaching the final weeks of second quarter, we are preparing for Winter Map/Map Fluency Testing, STEM Projects, and more complex skill building within ELA and Math.
To assist students with coming back from a long break and getting adjusted to classes we will not be having independent assignments on Wednesday January 13th. Please read the packets sent to you by your scholar's teacher and administration to make sure you are meeting all the requirements of the STEM project. Every project must have a video, these videos will be shown in class the following week.
As we continue throughout the school year, we expect scholars to continue to build their independence to prepare for first grade. Please continue to work with your scholars with navigating the various platforms, turning to pages in their book, and staying on task in class.
This week we will be working on the following lessons for each subject.

What's Happening in Third Grade
|
We want to wish everyone a Happy New Year! We have entered the second half of the school year. We are looking forward to seeing students grow as readers, writers, scientists, and mathematicians. We still have a lot more work to do. Let's continue to work together to ensure that our scholars are being productive, staying on top of their studies, and getting the most out of their third grade experience.
Just a friendly reminder to check SchoolMax weekly for your scholar's current standings in all of their classes. Encourage your scholar to stay on top of their assignments and complete their work in a timely manner. It is very easy to fall behind and we want to ensure that all scholars are successful. As a reminder, scholars will have an opportunity to resubmit assignments to improve their grade. Weekly grades will be entered by Sunday at midnight. Parents will have until Wednesday to request a redo of an assignment. Resubmissions must be submitted by the following Sunday. If an assignment is not eligible for a redo, teachers will put "not eligible for redo" in the assignment description.
Next week in Math, scholars will begin Topic 3 Fractions. In Science, scholars will begin Weather/ Clouds. In Reading, scholars will identify and analyze the characteristics of argumentative texts. In Social Studies, we will continue with Chapter 3 Communities Build a Nation.
We just want to share with families that Class Dojo is our main communication platform to share information with families quickly. Please check Class Dojo daily for any updates and new information shared.
Students should also be working on their STEM Fair Project and Research Paper. Both are due on January 19, 2021.
There will not be any small groups this Wednesday. We will be doing STEM Fair check ins with students.
Have an awesome week... on purpose!!

ROARING Toward STEM Fair Deadlines!
|
In Math, We are currently working on division utilizing place value. If they need more practice check out this site: https://toytheater.com/category/math-games/division/ We will be teaching your child the long division algorithm. This entails using Division, Multiplication, Subtraction, and then bringing down the next number. Next week, we will start our unit on Fractions. Please make sure your child continues to work on multiplication and division facts. This is our favorite digital multiplication table: https://www.mathsisfun.com/tables.html
In RELA this week, we read a poetry text: "Butterfly Eyes and Other Secrets of the Meadow." Our focus is on poetic language and elements, and visualizing imagery. Scholars began writing final drafts in class on the 7th. Next week, we will compare texts "The Weird and Wonderful Echidna" and "The Very Peculiar Platypus." We will use these informational texts to synthesize information. All research papers will be due on the 12th.
In Social Studies this week, we have continued learning about the economy and how we make economic choices in daily life. Next week, we will finish our unit on Economics and will take our Ch. 4 Assessment.
STEM FAIR DEADLINES ARE RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!
**Remember to look at your STEM fair packet** Scholars will submit 2 final products. They will submit the RESEARCH PAPER TO THEIR RELA TEACHER. They will turn in the STEM FAIR VIDEO TO THEIR SCIENCE TEACHER that explains all of the information they would have put on a poster board last year in the video. The video must be 3 - 10 minutes long including all components and have the child in the presentation. They must be in the images doing the experiment or in a video explanation on what they did. The scholar’s voice should explain the project, what they did, how, and why, using the format given in the STEM fair packet. We are very excited to see what our scholars come up with!

Physical Education:
Students this week are working on teamwork and team building activities. Students will continue with the activities next week as well. For the last week of 2nd quarter, in PE we will work on nutrition and "My Food Plate." Please check your child's Google Classroom to make sure that they are all caught up and are not missing anything to ensure that they have the best grade they can have by the end of the quarter.
Media:
Kindergarten and 1st grade: Students will answer questions about key details in a text using various digital platforms for stories and video books.
2nd and 3rd grade: Students will listen and respond to literature in a group setting using e-books. Students will determine the main idea, problem, and solution, in addition to predicting events or outcomes in a story will be the focus throughout this series.
4th and 5th Grade: In a multi-layered lesson, students will identify the parts and structure of an online news article by reading digital articles from magazines and newspapers. Over the weeks to come, lessons will emphasize the importance of being informed and understanding how online news articles work.
Continue encouraging students to read for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week.

Greetings, Google Classroom is only used to house the Padlet links for each class session. Scholars have been instructed to post their assignments with their full name in Padlet only, for credit. Assignments can be identified by their Padlet links that list the homeroom teacher and class date. Within the Padlet page, you will find the assignments, instructions, and references for that class period. A posting of the scholar’s work for that day, is due at the end of class.
Please refer to SchoolMax to confirm which assignments have not been received and graded. Contact Ms. Love (wlove@cmitelementary.org) or Mrs. Virgil (evirgil@cmitelementary.org) if you have issues accessing SchoolMax.
Missing 2nd quarter assignments are currently being graded and a confirmation will be sent after updating SchoolMax. After confirming all (2nd quarter) missing assignments have been posted, send a message in ClassDojo requesting a grade update. Sending screenshots of the posted assignments in Padlet is helpful.
Ecology:
Students will be working on their STEM fair projects during Ecology time!
Music:
Welcome back tigers! Fourth and fifth graders are FINALLY entering their digital audio workstation unit using Bandlab. This is a free website and free iOS app, so I encourage them to play around with it as much as they’d like outside of class. Grades 2 and 3 are reviewing another method of musical notation: solfege. Grades K and 1 are learning about instrument families and how they make sound.
