WELCOME! New Staff Members to CMIT Elementary
CMIT Elementary Family please help us welcome the following new members to our staff! We are pleased to have them join our CMIT community and wish them well in the roles they will take on. Amanda Twyman, School Secretary Some fun facts about Ms. Twyman is that she loves to shop. She has her own Circuit Design & Events Business. She also enjoys doing home décor and remodeling. Ms. Twyman loves spending time with family and friends. Best of all she loves people. Jason Chang, 2nd Grade Teacher Mr. Change grew up in Indonesia. He was interviewed by the Baltimore Sun on the first day of school during his first year of teaching. A fun fact: he likes alpacas. Amy Gunter, Support Staff With Ms. Gunter people are her passion. She loves helping others and she cheers for the underdog (she loves a good comeback story). She is secretly creative....a closet poet, an artist, and hobby baker. Her weaknesses are chocolate oreo milkshakes and the sound of rain. Jawaad Nickens, Support Staff Mr. Nickens is glad to be on board and eager to bring a new perspective to the team. Our heartfelt welcome goes out to them. Congratulations on being part of our amazing FAMILY TEAM!

As we continue to move forward with small groups and differentiated classwork, continue helping your scholar at home learn how to navigate these platforms. We had a fantastic fourteenth week in second grade! Next week in Reading, we will continue Unit 2: Nature's Wonders. The big question for the unit is "What patterns do we see in nature?" The question of the week is "How does a tree show patterns as the seasons change?" Throughout the week, we will focus on realistic fiction. The spelling pattern will be vowel digraphs: ie. In Math, we will begin Topic 4. This topic covers fluently adding within 100. As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. Please also begin planning out STEAM Fair projects! You can check the packet that was sent out for all of the different due dates! If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo. Have a terrific weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

This week we will be starting a new text: "Feathers: Not just for Flying." We focused on Main Idea and Details this week. We also began to research our STEM Fair Topics in class. Next week, we will complete our Feathers progress check. We will begin reading our first fiction text of the year. Our focus will be on plot and setting. This week in Social Studies, we learned about how these branches came to be and the history behind the government's creation. Next week, we will be reviewing the topics we learned in Chapter 3 and completing our Ch. 3 Assessment. Students will have a Review worksheet to work on to help them study; this worksheet will become “notes” that students can use as “open-notes” during the quiz. In Math, we will continue to work on 2 digit times 2 digit multiplication. Students are using partial products, area models, and arrays to help build understanding of what multiplication is and what it looks like. Our topic assessment will either be on Thursday or Friday December 10 or 11. Please urge your scholars to continue to practice their multiplication facts to gain fluency. Students should also be completing and reviewing/studying their math notebooks. Gentle reminder - students are to complete 60 minutes of IXL practice weekly. They have time in homeroom and during independent study breaks to complete. On Wednesdays they are to complete 35 minutes of math IXL recommended skills. In Science, we will continue to work through STEM fair information on the various pieces of their projects. Topics were due Friday December 4. Your scholar should start researching and should be starting their approved project topic. All STEM fair information is posted in Google Classroom under science

Hello parents! Here is a your week at a glance. In Math, we will work on dividing decimals and then move into word problems. Students will discuss how this can be applicable to real life. This will be a great table conversation to have with your scholars to help them hone in on their problem solving skills. For Science, students will close out the unit on weather and begin learning about the stars and our solar system. STEAM Fair packets were sent to all students on November 16th. Please contact your scholar’s science teacher if your scholar cannot find it. This is mandatory and imperative they adhere to the deadlines. As for Health, we will continue learning about nutrition. With the holidays here, it is important students understand how overconsumption of sugars and healthy foods can affect their minds and bodies. It will be a good idea to have these conversations with your scholar outside of class too, to help them understand the importance of health, nutrition and why it is a significant aspect of their lives. In Reading, students will read the informational text "Tracking Monsters." They will be revisiting the skill "Main Idea." Students will also begin composing their research paper for their STEM project. In Social Studies, students will begin Chapter 3: Lesson 3 - Pilgrims and Puritans in New England. REMINDERS: January 29th, 2021: 5th grade school shirts are due in MySchoolBucks. December 4th: STEAM Fair Topic due Please continue to check SchoolMax weekly. Thank you for all your continuous support and communication!

Sincerely, 5th Grade Team

CAREER CHATS are Back and Better than Ever!
Helloooooo Tigers Den! We are so excited to continue our College and Career Chats, virtually! If you haven't already, you will be hearing from our Parent Liaisons inviting you to present your career to our Tigers. It is always our goal to expose our Tigers to as many careers and ideas for their futures as possible...the motivation it creates is palpable! Your talks are invaluable. We have "themes" for each month, but are not limited! If you would like to virtually spend 30 minutes in our classroom(s) sharing your career (the schooling/training/experience required, what a 'day in the life...' looks like, etc!) please reach out to one of our Parent Liaisons to facilitate scheduling your visit! There is no limit to how many classes you can visit, the more the merrier, as we would love all of our tigers to have much opportunity for these chats as possible :) As of January 2021, we will be dedicating the 2nd Friday of each month for our "College and Career" day, however; if you are unable to speak on that day, we will certainly work with you and our teachers to schedule another time-- this is to be an inclusive initiative, not limiting. ALSO starting in January, on the 2nd Friday of each month, our Tigers will be invited (and encouraged!) to wear some college/university spirit wear! It is so much fun to see the many college and universities represented, discussed, (rivalries acknowledged, hehe!) and connections made to our staff members too! CHEERS! to continue to grow and shape Lifelong Learners, long after they leave our hallways (or virtual spaces...)!

Graciously, Your School Counselor [Mrs. Whitney Green]

Creative Arts
Updates and Information
The Creative Arts team would like to continue to remind everyone to check each specials teacher's Google Classroom during the week and that all Zoom links have been posted to each specials teacher's Google Classroom. If your scholar is still in the waiting room after the first 5 minutes of class, they most likely are not using the correct Zoom link and the one's in Google Classrooms are the correct ones. Reach out to any of of the specials teachers if you have questions. We look forward to the next few weeks with our scholars before we have another break from virtual learning. There is no school for students on Friday December 11th due to Teacher Professional Development Day. Physical Education: Students will continue to work on weight transfers and rolls with jumps. Landing will also be introduced this week. Parents please try to have your scholars work in a space that is open and give them an opportunity to work with us during live Zoom class. Pillows, blankets, or just a carpeted space will work just fine. This past week students did an excellent job of finding space and working on all the rolls with Mr. Hamms! Technology: Dear Parents, We live in a world surrounded by technology. We know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning how the technology works. Only 47% of all high schools teach computer science. That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 7-13). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code.To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge. See http://hourofcode.com/us for details Media: Kindergarten and 1st grade: Students will compare and contrast familiar stories with a newer version of a story. This week they will use "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." 2nd and 3rd grade: Is Seeing Believing? The students will use critical thinking skills to analyze and recognize altered photos and videos to determine differences and why individuals may alter videos. 4th and 5th Grade: Is it Cyberbullying? After completing the lesson, students will be able to: identify strategies for dealing with cyberbullying and how they can stand up for those being bullied. Students remember to read for 30 minutes 3-4 days a week. Music: It's DECEMBER! You know what that means....our scholars are once again studying the music and ballet of Pytor Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker. We are watching clips from the 1993 movie version, the 1986 movie version, and the Rockette's performance throughout December. Students are encouraged to get cozy during music class with a blanket or stuffed animal if they wish! We will make predictions about the story using musical clues and we'll study the instrumentation and body language as the story is told without words. Lego: K-2nd grade students will build their lego model and then explain the reasoning behind the model that he or she has built. Next week, our topic will be winter. 3-5th grade students will continue using simple loops and will deepen their understanding on why it is important to use loops. They will complete challenges 26-30. Art: Tigers have studio time this week and next. Classes will primarily consist of independent work to finish their projects before the holidays. Projects include portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, and other activities that develop their understanding of depth of field and value in 3D illusions. We will continue to stress craftsmanship as a priority. Materials include: Drawing Paper, pencils, markers, rulers, and colored pencils or crayons. Spanish: Buenas, I hope everything is well with you. This week we are going to introduce the topic of the animals. We will practice this topic with different activities to included: reading, listening and writing about different animals and their colors. The upper grades will complete an assignment in Google Classroom. Ecology: Students reviewed the scientific method and explored what a testable question is in Ecology. Students made mini rockets and airplanes. Have a great week!
