Happy Thanksgiving!!
We are still working on becoming independent with the platforms we are using this year. Your scholars will start using the platforms on a regular basis during school. If you see that your scholar needs extra assistance, please work with them at home. If you would like more information, reach out to your scholar's teacher. Though we are attending school online, it is important that your scholar still follows school rules and procedures. Scholars should be dressed appropriately for school, jeans, t-shirts, sweaters, etc. Pajamas are not appropriate for school attire. Scholars should not eat during class times. They are to eat during their breaks not during instruction, unless we are having a snack for a special activity. Scholars should be returning to class on time. They should be signed in by 8:00am, 10:35am, and 1:35pm. over the last few weeks we have noticed that numerous students are returning late to class, wearing pajamas, and eating during class times. We will start taking dojo points aways for not following school procedures if these items continue to be an issue. On Tuesday, we will be having a Harvest Celebration. Throughout the day we will be learning about Thanksgiving and fall. The activities we do will not be the curriculum, but subject based. Students may have snacks during the science block as we will be listening to music, watching videos and using the times to talk to our classmates. It will be a time to relax before Thanksgiving break. Our science test will be on the sun. Items on the test will include: the sun is a star and warms up earth and gives us light. We use shade to protect us from the sun and help keep us cool. Dates to know: Nov. 24- Science Topic 3 Assessment Nov. 24- Harvest Celebration Nov 25-27- Thanksgiving Break Dec 4th- STEM topic due

We had a terrific twelfth week in second grade! Next week in Reading, we will continue Unit 2: Nature's Wonders. The big question for the unit is "What patterns do we see in nature?" The question of the week is "What patterns can we see on a prairie?" Throughout the week, we will focus on informational text. The spelling pattern will be vowel digraphs: ai, ay, ea. In Math, we will be finishing up Topic 3. This topic covers adding within 100 using strategies. As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo. Have a terrific weekend and we will see everyone for a short week on Monday!

What's Happening In Third Grade
We are well off into the second quarter and we are looking forward to seeing scholars grow academically. We are in the season of thanks and the Third Grade Team would like to thank every family for your dedication, commitment, and patience as we navigate through distance learning. With your continuous support we will get through this. We want to send a reminder that scholars will have an opportunity to resubmit assignments to improve their grade. Weekly grades will be entered by Sunday at midnight. Parents will have until Wednesday to request a redo of an assignment. Resubmission must be submitted by the following Sunday. If an assignment is not eligible for a redo, teachers will put "not eligible for redo" in the assignment description. Next week in Math, scholars will continue with Unit 4: Use Multiplication to Divide: Division Facts. In Science, scholars will begin Electricity and Magnetism. STEM Fair topics are due on November 30th, 2020. In Reading, scholars will continue to work on the end of unit project. Scholars will conduct research on what could be done to improve a local park or playground. Scholars will write an opinion letter to a local official. In Social Studies, we will continue our study on Economics. We just want to share with families that Class Dojo is our main communication platform to share information with families quickly. Please check Class Dojo daily for any updates and new information shared. Also, next Wednesday November 25th, 2020 there will be no small group instruction. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving! ROARING INTO THE STEM FAIR!
In RELA this week, we finished up Barbed Wire Baseball, students completed their Progress checks for reading and writing and completed unit 1 by reviewing the skills we learned in this unit, and completing the Unit 1 assessment. Next week, students will practice writing research papers on Monday and Tuesday. In Social Studies this week, we reviewed Chapter 2 and took our Chapter 2 Assessment. We also introduced Chapter 3 Lesson 1, where we will explore how our government functions. Next week, we will continue to explore how our government functions. This week in Math, we continue to work on Topic 3: 1-digit Multiplication. We talked about multiple methods to use. We have talked about the area model, partial products, standard algorithm, and distributive properties. On Tuesday, November 24th, scholars will have their Topic 3 Assessment before Thanksgiving break. We will use these skills for Topic 4: 2-digit multiplication. For More IXL Practice: Multiply 1-digit numbers: https://www.ixl.com/math/lessons/multiplying-by-1-digit-numbers Area Model: https://www.ixl.com/math/lessons/area-model-multiplication Partial Products: https://www.ixl.com/math/lessons/partial-products STEM FAIR IS HERE!!! On Monday we had a school-wide STEM day! We had a blast making some hibernation stations. Thinking about the upcoming cold weather, we tied this into our current unit on human energy. We do not burrow underground and hide for winter, but we use other things to keep us warm, like fuzzy socks, blankets, and heavy coats. We used this activity to practice our Google slide skills. We will need these for the STEM FAIR PROJECT. On Wednesday, November 18, at 6 pm, Mrs. Esbin had a conversation with parents about what is expected for 4th and 5th grade STEM Fair Projects. This year projects will be digital. Scholars will create a 3 - 5 minute video explaining the elements of their project. They will be working on their research paper with their RELA teachers. On Monday and Tuesday Scholars will have STEM FAIR BOOT CAMP in their science class going over the student packet and all of its details. All materials will be under the topic “☢ STEM FAIR ☢” in their Science Google Classroom, to keep everything in the same spot. There will be no repeated projects for the 4th grade. Scholars will need to have their project approved by Mr. Williams or Mrs. Esbin. Scholars will be allowed to submit their ideas starting November 24th, Due November 30th. Final approvals will be given on December 4. If your scholar was told to pick a new topic, they must do so or complete the assigned topic. The key thing to look for when picking a topic is to follow the STEM FAIR PACKET AS A GUIDE. They will need to create a chart with their variable data using metric measurements only. They will need to test one factor that is changed (independent variable), using a constant to compare as the dependent variable to the other variable trials. For more information watch this tutorial made by Mrs. Esbin: https://youtu.be/II6-Romd8fg
