Week of November 16th
|
We had another amazing Dojo party to celebrate the scholars doing a great job with expectations, procedures, and work habits. As we continue into fall, there will be some changes made int the classroom. We are dedicated to getting small groups going now that we have set up routines. With the small groups starting, we will be dedicating time in heaping the students navigate through the platforms on their own as we will start using them on a daily basis. Please be patient as these changes occur. We are aware they may be time consuming but will be worth it in the end.
Make sure that your scholars are returning to class on time. Scholars are starting to return later and later at the end of the day.
Work should be submitted in a timely manner. We are aware that parents work and that scholars are in various settings, however; it is important that we receive the work that evening, or no later than the following day id absolutely necessary. We review the submitted work to evaluate if the students understood the lesson and base lesson plans on that data.
STEM Day is Monday, November 16th. We will be using our science block to explore different STEM activities. Keep an eye out for a message from your scholars teachers, as they will be letting you know if there are materials you may need for an activity.
This week in ELA we will:
Take the week 5 check-up assessment in SAVVAS. This assessment will be reviewing the sight words: for, me, with. It will also include the letters B and R, along with comprehension questions.
We will continue working with sight words: me, for, with, said.
We will learn about the letter D and short A.
We will continue discussing the authors purpose and starting to learn about adjectives.
This week in Math we will:
Have the Topic 3 assessment on Tuesday.
We will start learning to compare groups of 10
This week in Science we will:
Discuss how the sun can be a source of energy and discuss the solar system we live in. For our activity on the solar system, your scholar will need to have paper (preferably a thick white paper of some kind) and paints. We will be painting our solar system.
This week in Social Studies we will:
Start on Chapter 2: National and State Symbols. We will be learning what symbols are and what symbols represent state and nations.
Dates to know:

We had an excellent eleventh week in second grade!
Next week in Reading, we will begin Unit 2: Nature's Wonders. The big question for the unit is "What patterns do we see in nature?" The question of the week is "What patterns can we notice in a garden?" Throughout the week, we will focus on informational text. The spelling pattern will be contractions. In Math, we will continue Topic 3. This topic covers adding within 100 using strategies.
As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home.

What's Happening in Third Grade
|
We are well off into the second quarter and we are looking forward to seeing scholars grow academically. As we continue to move along, we want to ensure that all scholars are demonstrating their best work. Moving forward, scholars will have an opportunity to resubmit assignments to improve their grade. Weekly grades will be entered by Sunday at midnight. Parents will have until Wednesday to request a redo of an assignment. Resubmission must be submitted by the following Sunday. If an assignment is not eligible for a redo, teachers will put "not eligible for redo" in the assignment description.
Next week in Math, scholars will begin Unit 4: Use Multiplication to Divide: Division Facts. In Science, students will discuss and review STEM Fair expectations. In Reading, scholars will complete the end of unit project. Scholars will conduct research on what could be done to improve a local park or playground. Scholars will write an opinion letter to a local official. In Social Studies, we will continue our study on services. We also be participating in STEAM related activities on Monday for STEAM Day.
We just want to share with families that Class Dojo is our main communication platform to share information with families quickly. Please check Class Dojo daily for any updates and new information shared.
Also, Wednesday small group schedules are posted in Google Classroom for Math & Reading. Please keep in mind that your scholar may be meeting with both teachers on Wednesdays. Schedules are updated weekly.

ROARING Toward the STEM Fair!
|
STEM FAIR IS ON THE HORIZON! Start thinking of experiments that you would like to do. We will have a school wide event for STEAM day on November 16th. Make sure your MAKERSPACE has plenty of things to work with that are recyclable or craft orientated, we will be using these throughout the process of planning for the STEM FAIR!! In Science, we have been talking about the human effect of energy. We discussed 2-2 Nonrenewable Energy sources like; Fossil Fuels, Coal, Oil, Nuclear Energy and Natural Gas. We will start talking about 2-3 Renewable Energy Sources that include, hydraulic energy, solar power, geothermal energy, and wind harvesting.
In Health, we have talked about how caffeine affects the body using brain pop. We are in the swing of our HUMAN BODY UNIT for Health. We will next be talking about bruises and then broken bones. This unit will focus on diseases, injuries, and conditions. We will conclude this unit at the end of the 2020 calendar year.
In Math, we have started our TOPIC 3: Multiply Multi Digits by One Digit. Our student notebook is full of new anchor charts and links to check out. This is our best study tool. It cross references our materials. Only some of the pages are interactive, where scholars need to answer, but this is something that each student has their own copy and we work on in class EVERYDAY. Prodigy has been updated with Topic 3 skills, helping support in a fun extra way. IXL practice is still the best possible way to help scholars work on their skills. They need to be working on it during homeroom and Wednesdays as well, making a cumulative of at least 1 hour per week. This link is our favorite multiplication chart and more quick tips on multiplication: https://www.mathsisfun.com/tables.html
In Social Studies this week, we finished our chapter on early American history from the founding of the nation until the late 1960’s. Next week, we will review Ch. 2 and take the Ch. 2 assessment. We will also prepare for Ch. 3 by exploring how the U.S. government functions.
In RELA this week, we read "Barbed Wire Baseball." This is a biography. We focused on summarizing a text and chronological order text structure. Next Tuesday, students will complete their Progress checks for reading and writing. A review for this will post Friday at 2:00pm. Students will also complete a unit review, reviewing the skills for Unit 1, and complete the Unit 1 assessment.

Art:
Greetings,
Tigers are still finding their way around the Padlet platform. We will continue to familiarize ourselves for another week. It is making for a much more interactive experience amongst the Tigers.
Instructions for how to upload artwork into Padlet can be found: here: https://padlet.com/mdorsey11/rpsme0rkpba44ce8
Technology:
Greetings,
3-5 practiced: Hardware Fundamentals: Scanner
During this engaging and interactive digital lesson, the learners receive direct instruction and practice using a scanner for images or objects, saving a scanned image as a file, identifying components such as the scanning surface and scanning beam, and understanding how a scanner works.
K-2 practiced: Keyboarding: Cursor, Arrows, and Tab
In this engaging and interactive digital lesson, the learners receive direct instruction and practice with keyboarding using the cursor, arrows, tab, backspace and delete keys as they move the cursor, remove text, and create large spaces.
Physical Education:
K-5 will finish up throwing and catching skills, thank you parents for allowing the students to throw in the house and practice these skills carefully with Mr. Hamms.
K-2 students had a Pathways and Levels Quiz that was due Tuesday November 10th, please complete this with your child if it has not been complete yet.
K-5 Students also have a throwing/catching quiz that is due Tuesday November 17th!
After Thanksgiving break we will start to work on balances, rolls, weight transfers, and dynamic/static movements. Students will need space to complete the activities, the living room carpet, a basement space, a bedroom space. I don't want the students to roll or fall into something hard, if they can go outside that will work too, but that is weather related.
