2nd Grade News
We had a notable ninth week in second grade! Next week, we will continue Unit 1 in reading. The question of the week is "How can a new place help us change and grow?" Throughout the week, we will focus on realistic fiction. For spelling, we will be reviewing some of the words students have learned throughout our first unit of reading. In Math, we will be finishing up Topic 2. This topic covers working with equal groups. Be on the lookout for a message from your child's teacher regarding the date of the Topic 2 test. As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. NWEA MAP Reading Fluency Assessments will continue into next week. Please make sure to check your child's equipment if he/she has not already taken the assessment. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo. Have a terrific weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

ROARING Into November!
Thank you to everyone who has participated in their Small Groups on Wednesdays! These are going very well! Please continue to be present. There is no school next week on Tuesday, November 3rd. The marking period ends on Thursday, Nov. 5th. There is a 2hr early dismissal for students on Friday Nov. 6th. Remember that no assignments can be redone in the last week of the marking period. In RELA this week, we began reading "Life at the Top." We focused on text features and making predictions. We participated in Book Character Day on October 30th. Next week, we will finish reading "Life at the Top." In Social Studies this past week, we explored key events in the history of how the USA came to be. Next week, we will explore how the USA became a world power after the Civil War. This week in Science, we started our new Topic 2: Human Use of Energy. We started talking about 2-1 Energy Conservation. We will continue talking about Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy. We are connecting this to the last chapter where we talked about electricity and electrical circuits. This week in Math, we emphasized the need for IXL MATH practice. During homeroom 7:55 a.m. - 8:10 a.m. Scholars should be working on their IXL MATH starred skills. On a full week of school this should accumulate 60 minutes plus the required 30 minutes of practice on Wednesday. It will be a weekly total of 60- 90 minutes of practice. If they are late to homeroom they should be making up that practice time and work on time management skills. We started TOPIC 7. It talks about Factors, Multiples, Prime and Composite Numbers. Please try to work with your scholar on multiplication facts as that will help them be more successful with factors, multiples, and eventually multiplication. IXL is a great resource for this. We will have our Topic 7 Assessment on November 9th. On their Google Stream there is a playlist for skip counting of each base number on the multiplication chart. Here are some additional resources: More work on Factors: https://www.ixl.com/math/lessons/factors More work on Multiples: https://www.ixl.com/math/lessons/multiples More work on Prime and Composite Numbers: https://www.ixl.com/math/lessons/prime-and-composite-numbers *Please double check that SAVVAS work is being turned in properly. You must hit the turn in button/mark as completed in SAVVAS and make sure that the grade populates into Google Classroom. Without following these directions, the grade does not appear and the assignment might be marked as NHI or not handed in/ NAM or no attempt made. *In our effort to help our scholars foster independence please remind them to read the directions on everything they are doing.
