MESA Club
Students interested in MESA club should have signed up on the club Google form. Students who made the lottery were added to the MESA club ClassDojo class. Mrs. Mccain-Wigfall is your coordinator. Contact bmccain@cmitelementary.org. Lastly, club attendance is mandatory. Students may be dismissed from the MESA club if they miss two sessions or have two behavior infractions. Thank you for your dedication to STEM! We will meet Thursdays at 3:00pm.

Our September Student of the Month Zoom Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, October 21st at 11:30 a.m. Students will receive special invitations for the event. Congratulations to all of our scholars who were recognized for the month of September.

Week of October 19th
Thank you to all the parents that signed up and participated in the parent-teacher conferences. We were able to speak with a majority of the parents about how your scholars are progressing and small group plans. If you have not done so already, start thinking about the Character Day Book Report and STEM projects as they are both due on October 30th. Practice the presentation with your scholar to help them prepare presenting to the class. You may submit the projects early into Google Classrooms. On Monday, October 19th, we will be hosting Donuts with dads. This is a chance for all male role models to spend time with the scholars and visit their classroom in the morning. Information and the link to sign up has been posted in your scholars Dojo class stories. On Thursday, October 22nd, we will be having a virtual field trip to a pumpkin patch and an orchard. Throughout the day we will be doing various activities related to the virtual field trips. This week in ELA, we will be learning about informational text, nouns, the letters Cc and Pp, and introducing plural nouns (adding s) The sight words for this week are: have, is, he In Math, we will be learning about less than and continue learning about comparing groups. We will be doing sections 2-3, 2-4, and 2-5 in the workbook. In Social Studies, we will be learning about what is a citizen and what makes a good citizen. In Science, we will continue learning about the 3 states of matter and the 5 senses. Important dates: Oct. 19--Donuts with Dads Oct. 22-- Virtual Field Trip Oct. 26--Math, Topic 2 Assessment Oct 27--Science, Topic 2 Assessment Oct 30.--STEM Family Project Due Oct. 30---Character Day Book Report Due

This Week in First Grade
Reading - We will be reading "Garden Party" and "Click, Clack, Click" to compare two stories using Venn Diagrams. The focus will be on characters, realistic fiction genre, connections, and how characters feel. Grammar: We will be learning prepositions Phonics: silent e with a (a_e) Math - We are starting Topic 14. Science - We are learning about Light Energy. Social Studies - We are learning about My Government. Health - We are using Sanford Harmony Unit 2 to learn about Empathy and Critical Thinking. Reminders: Independent assignments will be given this week starting Monday, and will be due on Friday 10/23.

We had a terrific seventh week in second grade! Next week, we will continue Unit 1 in reading. The question of the week is "How do different places make us feel?" Throughout the week, we will focus on poetry. The spelling pattern for the week will be consonant digraphs. In Math, we will begin working on Topic 2. This topic covers working with equal groups. As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. Please feel free to sign up for Donuts for Dads on 10/19/2020. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo. Have a terrific weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

What's Happening in Third Grade
We have reached the half way point of the first quarter. We would like to thank everyone who "zoomed" in for Parent Teacher Conferences. There is still time for your scholars to improve their grades. Please encourage your scholar to participate during class discussions and submit his/her work. Please continue to check SchoolMax to get weekly updates on your scholar's progress in all classes. Next week in Math, students will have their topic assessment on October 22, 2020 and will begin a new unit in applying properties in multiplication. In Science, students will continue to learn about Force and Motion. In Reading, students will be analyzing characters in a realistic fiction story to determine the theme. In Social Studies, students will learn how we interact with our environment. Please encourage your scholar to check Google Classroom for any updates regarding the Wednesday schedule for small group instruction. Groups are flexible and will change periodically. ROARING Through October
This week in RELA, we began reading "Twins in Space," focusing on the genre Magazine Article, students will work on the skills of text structure and evaluating details. We will continue this next week. Students will take the assessment on Thursday. Small Groups started this week, thank you to everyone who attended and did their best. This week in Social Studies, we took our Chapter 1 Assessment and explored ways the USA has changed and ways it has stayed the same since its beginning. Next week, we will continue to explore ways that the USA has changed and ways it has stayed the same since its beginning. This week in Science, we finished up our section on 1-3: Energy Transfer. Next week we will be learning about 1-4 Electrical Circuits. For Health, Ms. Green came to visit our classes. She talked to us about how digital learning is different and checked in on skills they want to work on for our Social Emotional Program. We will continue to work with the Sanford Harmony Program to focus on these skills, based on their interest survey. In Math this week, we have been adding and subtracting larger numbers with regrouping. Subtraction tends to be more difficult for our scholars so please work with them if and when you can. They will be taking their topic 2 assessment October 23.

Hello parents, This week in ELA we are going back to informational text. Student's will read the story "Picturesque Journeys." Students will learn about some of the great painters in history and how traveling to different places around the world helped to inspire their artistic mind. Students will go over the skill cause and effect as well as parts of speech. In Social Studies, students will begin Chapter 2 lesson 1 which begins to speak about why people want to explore. Students will learn how technology helped European explorers sail to and settle in new places. This week for Math, we will be covering multiplication and dividing fractions. In Science, we will discuss Earth systems such as Geosphere, Hydrosphere, and Atmosphere and how they are connected. For Health, we will continue learning about parts of the brain. Media: Kindergarten and 1st Grade: Sequencing using stories, songs, and recipes. 2nd and 3rd Grade: Continuing Look Closely! How illustrations help us understand the story, then students will create a Dream Illustration using ideas from the story. 4th and 5th Grade: Continuing with Digital Friendships – How to keep online friendships safe, using activities to enforce what scholars have learned. Reminder: Our scholars should read for 15–30 minutes about 3-5 times a week. Please make sure that students have a notebook dedicated to Library and Media. Tech: 3-5 practiced: Software Fundamentals: Software and File Formats: The learners receive direct instruction and practice with software programs and file formats as they identify software groups, select task-appropriate software, start and exit software programs, and create, name, save, print, and close files in this engaging and interactive digital lesson. K-2 practiced: Keyboarding: Locate and Type Letters U, V, W, X, Y, and Z: In this engaging and interactive digital lesson, the learners receive direct instruction and practice in keyboarding the letters U, V, W, X, Y, and Z as they locate and type the letters, recognize the letter sounds, and learn the relationship between the letters on the keyboard and on the screen. Lego: K-2nd grade: Students will be recognizing and understanding surprised emotion. They will build a surprise Lego model. 3-5th grade students will : -Review what they learned in the previous lesson - Discuss the concept of planning and its importance in coding -Complete challenges 13-15 Spanish: Buenas, This week we are going to review and practice: - Different greetings and days of the week - Different rooms of the house Can do statements: - Students will be able to interpret and communicate inter-personally different types of greetings in Spanish according to the part of the day. - Students will be able to interpret different colors in Spanish. - Students will be able to produce complete sentences expressing the colors of different rooms in the house. We will learn the vocabulary in context by practicing the words in small conversations and by doing some interpretative reading activities. Remember to complete the tasks in Rockalingua. Have a great week! Art: Scholars will be putting their final touches on projects in landscapes, seascapes, and portraits. They are increasing their level of craftsmanship. Fifth grade will need to be sure to bring scissors and tape, among other items listed in Google Classroom for next week's project. Physical Education: K-2 students will work on Speeds; Over, Under, Around, & Through; Pathways; and Levels for the next 2 weeks. Students will need space, please have them set up for PE somewhere in the house where they can move and be active. Have a great week, we look forward to hopefully seeing all kids on camera.

Virtual Donuts with Dads
CMIT Elementary PTO is sponsoring a "Virtual Donuts with Dads" event in celebration of Men Make a Difference Day on Monday October 19th at 8am. Men Make a Difference Day acknowledges the vital role fathers and male role models play in the academic achievement of children. The day provides fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, and other male role models with an opportunity to eat breakfast with their student(s) while we have a small presentation with a guest speaker and after virtually visit the classroom.
