We have completed our first week of curriculum. The workbooks we are currently using are volume 1 for ELA and Math, as well as the science and social studies workbooks. Please keep the workbooks we are currently using separate from the other workbooks in order for your scholar to finish the books they need independently. This will also help with confusion about which workbook we are working in.
In ELA, we will learn the sight words: like, to, a.
We will also learn about the elements of a story.
In math, we will continue working with the numbers 4 and 5 and we will begin learning about the numbers 6, 7, 8.
In social studies, we will continue learning about how to work together and cooperate with one another.
In science, we will continue to learn about the forces of push and pull. We will start investigating how the forces can change the movement and direction of objects.
We have hands on activities planned in which your scholar will need a ball. The ball can be any size. Your scholar will also need access to books or other materials that can be used to make a maze.
The math MAP will occur on Tuesday, September 22nd. Make sure that your scholar has a good night sleep and breakfast before the assessment. This will help them focus and do their best. The MAP make-ups will be held on Wednesday September 23rd. if your scholar was unable to take an assessment or did not finish, they will do so on Wednesday. Information for the make-up testing will be given out on Tuesday.

We had a terrific third week in second grade. We are really starting to get the swing of things!
Next week, we will continue Unit 1 in reading. In class, we will be reading "Maybe Something Beautiful" Throughout the week, we will focus on realistic fiction. We will also be working with long vowel: CVCe words. In math, we will continue working on Topic 1. This topic covers fluently adding and subtracting within 20.
Since we will be using the curriculum for the first time, we are anticipating a few problems with logging in or accessing material. We will continue to practice and strive to be tech-savvy tigers.
We will also be continuing our MAP testing. Students will take their MAP-Math test on 9/22/2020. Please be on the lookout for more information regarding these tests.
As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home.
If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo.
Have a terrific weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

What's New in Third Grade
|
Scholars have been working so hard and we are proud to see how well they are adapting to our learning platforms. We know that a lot has been going on and we do appreciate your patience and flexibility as we navigate these unknown waters together.
In Math, scholars will continue to discuss multiplication. In Science, they will continue with Motion & Forces. In Reading, scholars will be reading traditional tales focusing on setting, character, and plot. In Social Studies, we will begin looking at our environment.
We will continue to take our MAP assessments next week. Scholars will be taking the MAP-Math. For testing, we are encouraging parents to set up a testing station for their scholar. We are also encouraging scholars to be in a quiet setting with limited distractions. During testing, we ask that parents do not assist their scholar in anyway. The data from these assessments will allow us to have a true picture of where your scholar is at academically and how we can support their academic growth.
Just a friendly reminder, that on Wednesdays students should be completing assignments posted in both of their classes to be marked present. Once students have completed the assignments, they should be marking the assignment as done or Turning it in.
Here are a few tips to troubleshoot some issues that may arise when using the SAVVAS platform:
-At the end of the school day, have your scholar shut down his or her device so that it can get a rest and be ready for the next day.
-When on the SAVVAS platform, ensure that your scholar is on Google Chrome when logging in.
Let's have a great week on purpose!

ROARING into the Swing of Fourth Grade
|
We are excited to see that students are becoming more independent and are having more ease when navigating school platforms. Students tried their hardest during testing this week and we are SO PROUD!! Students will continue with MAP testing next week.
This week in RELA,, we began our reading curriculum. We read Reaching for the Moon, by Buzz Aldrin, and began focusing on narrative nonfiction writing and autobiographies. Next week, we will continue reading "Reaching for the Moon" and working on our narrative nonfiction skills.
This week in Social Studies, we began exploring the Geography of the United States and how geography (and the specific land features of various regions) affect humans’ daily lives. In Social Studies next week, we will explore how the weather and climate of different geographical regions affects the region’s environment and daily life.
This past week in math we worked on place value and numbers in topic 1 of the SAVAAS math book. This week we will continue to work with place value. Math independent work from SAVAAS will start and will be a week behind (students learned the skill they are practicing the week prior).
This past week we started using our Science Textbook. We read about Energy, Speed, and Motion. We introduced new vocabulary; energy, potential energy, kinetic energy, speed, transfer, transform. We also discussed the different forms of energy; potential energy, kinetic energy, electrical energy, and chemical energy. Next week on Thursday, we will be taking an open book quiz on this topic.

Welcome (Back) to the Tigers’ Den!
At CMIT North ES, my goal is to provide all of our students with a wealth of knowledge, skills and support to help them successfully navigate the virtual leaning platforms that we will be exploring and utilizing during the 2020-2021 school year.
Statistics overwhelming show that parental involvement is the key to overall success of children. With instruction being virtual this year, your involvement will be critical in helping your child adapt and adjust to online instruction. Children whose parents are actively involved in their formal education undoubtedly have greater academic achievement. Additionally, children are more motivated when their parents show an interest. When schools and parents work together, students benefit tremendously academically, socially and emotionally. For those reasons, it is so very important that we continue to work together as a team, and I could not be more excited to have the opportunity to partner with you all again this year.
I recognize that some children (and adults!) have a difficult time adapting to online instruction, which could lead to frustration and anxiety. If you or your child has any concerns about these elevated feelings, please don’t hesitate to contact me. While I cannot change our current environment, I can absolutely work with your scholar and family to support the learning process in this new and somewhat unfamiliar platform, and focus on building capacities for identification of those feelings and the tools and strategies that help to mitigate them.
As your child’s Professional School Counselor, I play an instrumental role in working directly with your child on their academic, career, and emotional/social development. This year’s emphasis will be on providing classroom guidance lessons with a focus on social-emotional learning. Due to COVID-19, I am aware that many of our students are having a difficult time managing their emotions. We’ll work through those emotions together, in classroom guidance and individually if necessary.
If you should have any questions and/or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me directly @ writchie@cmitelementary.org
Together, we’ll get through this!
Sincerely,
Whitney Green
Professional School Counselor
Graciously,
Your School Counselor
