ELA/Math Game Night Postponed

Hello Families,
ELA/ Math game night has been postponed!
Parent University members will be collaborating with the PTO on Wednesday, February 26, 2020. We will engage families with primary and intermediate ELA/Math activities. Shortly after the PTO meeting will proceed. We hope that all are able to attend.

Black History Month Presentations
|
On Thursday February 13, 2020 students enjoyed "Grandma's Cautionary Tales" Black History performance sponsored by our PTO. The stories engaged the audience in an
entertaining and interactive style. Most importantly, students learned morals and lessons from the stories.
Later, on Thursday February 18, 2020 the members of the Prince George's County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. engaged students with a presentation on Women in Black History: Education, Technology, and Politics.
We also had a parent volunteer from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., participate in Community Service Day as she assisted with the book room and hallway bulletin board.
Thank you all for being a pivotal member of our village!

Week of February 24th
|
We are almost another month down! Time is sure flying by.
IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE SO, RETURN THE BOOK FORM FOR THE CLASS BOOK THAT WILL BE PUBLISHED. YOUR SCHOLAR MAY NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE BOOK IF THAT FORM IS NOT SIGNED AND RETURNED.
This week you will receive a copy of your scholar's KRA information from the beginning of the year.
Please remember to label your scholar's items so they can be easily identified if misplaced. There have been lunch boxes, sweaters, hats, coats, ect. that have been misplaced and we are unable to identify who they belong to.
Recess will be outdoors whenever the weather permits.
The field trip packet has been submitted to the county and we are waiting to hear back from them with the confirmation of our trip to the Aquarium.
The story for the week in ELA is Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
We will be working on identifying characters, writing lists, writing the letter G, initial, and final /g/ sound, and identifying and writing telling sentences (when have you helped someone). Words for the week: one, two, three, four, five
Our spelling test will be on Friday on the words: one, two, three, four, five, are, that, do, like, me
In math, we are working on finding the parts of numbers 14-19, counting on (start at 8, what is 10 more?)
The Topic 10 assessment will be on Thursday.
In science, we are continuing with our ocean theme and will be learning about Skate fish.
In social studies, we are learning about maps and will spend this week discovering continents and oceans.

Reading - We will be reading "Just Going to the Dentist" by Mercer Mayer.
Reading Skills: making predictions, retelling, making connections, making inferences, and writing opinions
Phonics: long i, spelled 'ie' and 'igh' (example: pie, tie, night, tight)
Math - We are continuing Chapter 8, which is understanding place value.
Science - We are continuing to learn about the planets in the solar system.
Social Studies - We are learning about National Holidays.
Health - We are continuing to learn about communication by actively listening and responding.
Our school is holding an African American Read-In event from February 3 through February 28. Sign-up genius links have been sent out via Class Dojo!
Don't forget about the Moon Tracker that is due on Friday, February 28, 2020!

We had a great week in second grade.
Next week, we will be continuing our reading unit about our changing world. The question of the week will be, "How do changes in the weather affect us." In class, we will be reading "The First Tortilla." Throughout the week, we will focus on plot and theme, as well as, monitor and clarify. The spelling pattern for List A next week will be vowel digraphs: oo, ue, ew, ui. In math, we will be continuing Topic 8. This topic covers working with time and money.
As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home.
Please continue to send your child to school in the correct school uniform. The only day children do not have to wear all black shoes is his/her PE day.

Our Tigers did an awesome job during our presentation for K-2. Great job!
Next week in Math, students will be taking their assessment on Fractions on Monday. Students will also review for their SLO Test on Friday. In Science, we will be studying life science. In Reading, we will continue with our novel study discussing the central message in the story. We will also be taking our assessment on Chapters 1-10 of our novel. In Social Studies, we will study communities building a nation.
We encourage all families to check SchoolMax periodically to get a snapshot of how your scholar is doing in his/her classes.
Please join the Third Grade Team as we celebrate Black History Month with Read Ins in the classrooms. Parents are invited to read a book by an African American author/illustrator to their scholar's class. You are encouraged to bring an age appropriate book to share. If you don't have a book, no worries, we have plenty in the classroom for you to choose from. You have to be fingerprinted to participate. Please only sign up for one slot in your scholar's homeroom. On your assigned day, please sign in at the front office and someone will escort you to the classroom. Thanks!

ROARING Right Along!

This week in RELA, scholars began to read "Shiloh," which will be our novel until the end of the third quarter. We read chapters 1 and 2. We explored First Person and Third Person Point of View and Monitored Our Inner Thinking. Our grammar skill was Irregular Verbs.
Next week, students will learn life facts about Influential Black History Figures, and continue reading Shiloh chapter 3 and 4. Our grammar skill will be Singular and Plural Pronouns.
In Social Studies next week, students will complete Chapter 3 Lesson 3 and learn about Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens.
Students should be working on their Black History Essays. These are due February 27th. They will be turned in on Google Classroom. Please click on “View Assignment” and then select “Attach” to attach the essay.
Math and Science we are starting new chapters.
This week in science, we started to learn about animals and plants. We are working on classifications of plants and animals. We started to talk about the 17 vocabulary words this chapter is going to require. Most of these are brand new words that we are going to learn how to work with. We will be talking about how things are classified and how we can put things in categories. Next week, we will be talking about how they reproduce. In Health, we are coming to the end of our hygiene conversations. This includes talking about the results of our Hand Washing experiment.
For math, last week we finished Topic 9 on Adding and Subtracting fractions with Like Denominators. Next week, we will be starting Topic 12 on Decimals. We will focus on decimals and fractions.
Please make sure your student has working headphones in class.

Hello Parents!
February is almost coming to a close! Can you believe it? Time is flying! Here is what to anticipate next week.
For ELA, students will review Unit 3 which focuses on learning about how inventors and artists inspire us. They will review skills such as main idea, troublesome verbs, and transitional phrases. Students will also continue reading "Bud, Not Buddy." In social studies, students will continue studies on the Civil Rights Movement. We will research and read passages about the Greensboro Sit Ins.
In Math, we will continue to learn about polygons and angles. In Science, we will be finishing up Chapter 4 on Ecosystems by the end of the week. After this, we will move into reviewing for the MISA, starting with chapter 5.
REMINDERS/UPDATES:
February 24- IXL paper due
February 28-- Wax Museum/ February Book Project DUE **students should come to school dressed as the African-American they researched.
