Pretty Brown Girl Day
The Pretty Brown Girl Club will be celebrating the 10th Annual International Pretty Brown Girl Day on February 22, 2020. We will be hosting a vision board party for all girls and women in our school community. In honor of Women’s History Month (March), some of the boards will be displayed. Week of November 17th
We have submitted our field trip forms and are waiting to hear back from the county. Information will be sent out as soon as it becomes available to us. This week in ELA, our story of the week is "One little Mouse." Sight words are: one, two, three, four, five We will be learning about consonant blends, sequencing, writing complete sentences, and descriptions. In Math this week, we will be working on making numbers 11-19 and finding the parts of numbers 11-16. In Science, we will continue learning about ocean animals in preparation for our trip to the Baltimore Aquarium. In Social Studies, we are learning about maps. Dates to know: Feb 17- No School

Next Week in First Grade
Reading - We will be reading "Abe Lincoln's Hat" by Martha Brenner. Reading Skills: problem vs. solution, making connections, making inferences, and writing opinions Phonics: long e, spelled 'e' and 'ee' (example: be, me, see, free) Math - We are continuing Chapter 8, which is understanding place value. Science - We will are continuing to learn about the planets in the solar system. Social Studies - We are continuing to learn about the American Constitution. Health - We are continuing to learn about communication. Our school is holding an African American Read-In event from February 3 through February 28. Sign-up genius links have been sent out via Class Dojo! Don't forget about the Moon Tracker that is due on Friday, February 28, 2020!

We had an amazing week in second grade.
Congratulations to all the scholars who received Perfect Attendance and Honor Roll certificates. Keep up the great work! Next week, we will be continuing our reading unit about difficult changes. The question of the week will be "Why are some changes difficult? In class we will be reading, 'The Night the Moon Fell". Throughout the week, we will focus on text-based comprehension plot and theme. The spelling patterns for list A will be compound words. In math, we will continue topic 8 which covers time and money. As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. As always, if you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via classdojo. Happy Valentine's Day and we will see everyone on Tuesday! -The Second Grade Team

Weekly News
We would like to thank all of our guest readers who visited our classrooms to share a book with our scholars. Next week in Math, students will be finishing up equivalent fractions. Students will take their topic 12 assessment on Friday. In Science, we will be studying life science. In Reading, we will continue with our novel study discussing the characters' motivations & feelings. We will also be taking our assessment on Chapters 1-10 of our novel. In Social Studies, we will study communities building a nation. We encourage all families to check SchoolMax periodically to get a snapshot of how your scholar is doing in his/her classes. Please join the Third Grade Team as we celebrate Black History Month with Read Ins in the classrooms. Parents are invited to read a book by an African American author/illustrator to their scholar's class. You are encouraged to bring an age appropriate book to share. If you don't have a book, no worries, we have plenty in the classroom for you to choose from. You have to be fingerprinted to participate. Please only sign up for one slot in your scholar's homeroom. On your assigned day, please sign in at the front office and someone will escort you to the classroom. ROARING through February
This week in RELA, students worked in groups to create dramas with themes related to Gift of the Heart. Our grammar skill was Past, Present, and Future Tense Verbs. We also took our First MCAP Practice. Next week, scholars will begin to read "Shiloh" which will be our novel until the end of the third quarter. We will explore topics such as, character development and try to gain an understanding of why people make difficult decisions and how one person's view of the world can affect others. Our grammar skill will be Irregular Verbs. In Social Studies this week, students completed Chapter 3 Lesson 2 and learned How the Government works. Please make sure your student has working headphones in class. This week in Math, we worked with comparing fractions with like denominators. The trickiest part that scholars encountered was working on regrouping mixed fractions. Next week, we will have a test for Topic 9 on Wednesday. We will be working on multiplying fractions in Topic 10. If scholars need to look at fraction tiles from home, this website is a wonderful resource: https://www.abcya.com/games/fraction_percent_decimal_tiles In Science, we finished up Chapter 3 Electricity and Circuits. Next week, we will be introducing Chapter 4. This topic will focus on Plants and Animals. We will have a class project to help enhance this. Please make sure that scholars have the appropriate supplies from their supply that they need to succeed. They should have colored pencils, scissors, glue, highlighter, and 2 pencils everyday to start their day. We had a GREAT time at the National African American Museum of History and Culture on Tuesday!! Next week is a 4 day week due to President's Day. Students should be working on their Black History Essays. These are due February 27th. They will be turned in on Google Classroom.

Hello Parents, This week in math, we are exploring plane figures. In science, we will cover how plants get and use energy, and how organisms interact in ecosystems. For ELA, students will begin their story for the week "Special Effects in Film and Television." Students will work on the skill Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases. In social studies, students will continue learning and exploring in our Black History Unit! Have a great week all and thank you for your continuous support!
