Welcome February!
Testing will be ending this week and scores and other information will be sent home in the next couple of weeks. Feel free to reach out to your scholar's teacher with any questions you may have regarding the information. We are looking forward to some warmer weather and returning outside for recess. With that in mind, label your scholars items so they can be easily identified and returned. We do go out as long as the weather is 40 degrees so please send your scholars in appropriate outer wear. There will be opportunities to volunteer in the month of February. We would love for you to come and do read aloud's and other activities with your scholars. The next field trip will be on March 19, 2020 to the Baltimore Aquarium. If you are able to chaperone, let your scholar's teacher know as soon as possible. There are deadlines for paperwork and we need to start gathering all information as soon as possible. We would like to have 6 chaperones per class. This week in ELA the story will be "Rooster's Off to See the World." Our sight words will be: are, that, do Letter of the week: Hh We will be learning about putting a story in sequential order, naming parts of a sentence (who/what a sentence is about) and giving directions to do/make something. In Math, we will be learning how to count and write numbers 11-20. In preparation for our field trip to the aquarium, we will spend the next couple of months learning about various ocean life in science.

We had an awesome week in second grade. Next week, we will be continuing our reading unit about our changing world. The question of the week will be, "how do plants change over time?" In class, we will be reading "The Life Cycle of a Pumpkin." Throughout the week, we will focus on sequencing and important ideas. The spelling pattern for List A next week will be vowel patterns oo and u. In math, we will be finishing up Topic 6. This topic covers fluently subtracting within 100. As a way to support your child please practice subtraction with regrouping at home. As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home. Please continue to send your child to school in the correct school uniform. The only day children do not have to wear all black shoes is his/her PE day. As always, if you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo. Have a great weekend and we will see everyone on Monday!

ROARING into Third Quarter
In Math, we continue to work on fractions. We will begin to complete practice MCAP problems to get scholars ready for the test in May. All homework and information continues to be posted in Google Classroom. IXL must be completed for 20 minutes each night. There are sections they should work on. Just a reminder, if they get mastery in a section they still need to keep working until the full 20 minutes is achieved. IXL is a fantastic tool that gives instant feedback and suggestions that will help scholars correct their misconceptions. In Science, we have completed our physics section of speed and motion, Chapter 2. Next week, we will start Chapter 3 on Energy. We will be talking about circuits and how energy flows. They will be testing how energy can be disrupted. In Health this month, we have focused on identifying our own skills and how scholars can make an honest assessment of how they interact with others on a social-emotional level. Next month, we will be having HYGIENE talks! We will be talking about body changes, hormones, deodorant, and scholars will be able to create a habit tracker to follow. There will be a science lab to talk about the importance of washing their hands. In RELA this week, we continued to work with poetry, focusing on theme, imagery, and tone. Our grammar skill was Main and Helping Verbs. Next week, we will begin looking at dramas and their components. Our grammar skill will be Subject-Verb Agreement. In Social Studies, this week students completed their Chapter 2 assessment. We will begin Chapter 3 next week: Principles of the United States Government. Students should be working on their Black History Essays. Be sure to review the Rubric in Google Classroom. These are due February 27th. They will be turned in, by attaching the Google Doc to the Assignment on Google Classroom.
