Black History Month Essay and Poster Contest Deadline - Friday, January 24th, 2020
|
Essay Requirements (Grades 6-12 ONLY):
At least 250 words, but shall not exceed 500 words
• Typed and double-spaced
• Original work only

Scoring Rubric
Comprehension (20 points)
How well does the essay reflect a thorough comprehension of the essay topic? Does the essay provide supported reasons for the student’s topic selection?
Organization (20 points)
Does the argument/discussion follow a logical and easily understood progression? Does any outside evidence contained in the essay support the essay’s main points?
Conclusions (20 points)
Do the conclusions follow logically from the main body of the essay and reflect what the student has learned from research? How compelling are the conclusions?
Creativity (20 points)
Use of diverse resources, language &/or style, unique angle?
Writing (20 points)
Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure.
Poster Requirements (Elementary ONLY):
• Poster MUST be 18x14 inches
• Illustrates & supports a significant African American
• Illustrates the contribution clearly and with artistic energy
• Is it Colorful? Creative? Innovative? Legible? Different? Finished?
• Poster should have a caption of at least three sentences, but no more than 10 to include who, what, and how the person contributed to shaping history.
• Poster should mention at least one NEW thing the student learned during this contest? (E.g. arts in STEAM, African American role models, about oneself, society, African American history &/or culture, etc.)
CLF will have 3 winners from each division who will receive a $50 gift card. Student winners and their parents will be invited to an awards reception hosted by CLF. One honorary mention from each school/division will be asked to read their essay or present their poster submission. Refreshments will be served and community leaders, special guests, fellow students, teachers, school officials, and board members will be in attendance.

Black History Community Service Day/ Presentation Date

Hello Parents,
This message serves as a friendly reminder about our Black History Month volunteering opportunity.
If you are in partnership with an African American sorority, fraternity, social fellowship or organization and you would like to participate in Community Service Day or Presentation Day, please sign up on the link below. Undergraduate/ graduate chapters from any sorority/ fraternity is encouraged to participate.
On Community Service Day, you will be able to assist our CMIT staff with various activities from 10AM- 12PM. On Presentation Day, you will be required to conduct two assemblies (for K-2 students and 3-5 students). A brief but engaging Powerpoint presentation will be required in addition to a performance (step, dance, etc). Please sign up for only one day!

KUK SOOL WON WINTER INTRAMURAL TOURNAMENT
|
On Saturday January 25, 2020 students from CMIT Middle and CMIT Elementary Kuk Sool Martial Arts Club will be participating in the Annual Kuk Sool Won Winter Intramural Tournament. The tournament will take place at CMIT Elementary School, which is hosting the tournament for the third straight year!

Spectator Fee: $5.00

Last Week of Quarter 2
|
We are in the final week of the second quarter. This week is also the last week of testing for the winter. Please make sure your scholar is well rested and has a good breakfast. Also, help reinforce the importance of taking their time and doing their best.
This week in ELA, we will work on drawing conclusions of the stories we read.

Letter of the week is Oo working on initial and medial /o/
We will also start working on developing sentences.
In Math, we will learn to fluently add and subtract to 5 and decompose and represent numbers 6-10.
We will also start working with words problems.
Black History month is right around the corner and there will be opportunities for you to come in and volunteer in the classroom. A sign-up genius will be sent out next week.
We are planning our next field trip to the aquarium in the end of March. In order to make sure this happens, we will need 25 chaperones. If you would like to chaperone, please respond as soon as possible to your scholar's teacher when the message comes out next week.

Reading - We will be reading "The Emperor's Egg" by Martin Jenkins.
Reading Skills: non-fiction vs. fiction, author's purpose
Phonics: long u, spelled 'ew' and 'ue' (ex: flew, blue)
Math - We are beginning Chapter 13, which is telling time to the hour and half-hour.
Science - We are using the Engineering Design Process to design igloos.
Social Studies - We are continuing to learn about symbols and traditions of the United States.
Health - We are continuing to learn about community helpers and understanding stereotypes about objects and roles.

We had an amazing week in second grade!
Next week, we will be reviewing our reading unit on Creative Ideas. There will only be one spelling list next week. The words will be an assortment of spelling words from this past reading unit. In math, we will be continuing Topic 6. This topic will cover fluently subtracting within 100.
As a reminder, it is recommended that students practice their basic addition and subtraction facts with flashcards regularly at home.
Please continue to send your child to school in the correct school uniform. The only day children do not have to wear all black shoes is his/her PE day.

Students had an awesome time at Skate Zone. We would like to thank all the parents that came out and made this trip a success.
Next week in Reading, students will be making inferences and determining the central message in our weekly story "Pushing Up the Sky." In Social Studies, we will be finishing up Chapter 2 and taking our assessment. In Math, we will be studying Time & Measurement. In Science, we will be studying Force and Motion/ Magnets. Students will take their Math assessment on 1/27. We will also be finishing up our MAP-Math assessment.

Skating into Third Quarter
|
This week we had MAP testing. We will be finishing up our testing next week. We learned about the STEM aspects of skating on our field trip to Skate Zone. We also had fun Friday.
There is no school on Monday of next week due to Martin Luthor King Jr. Day. Scholars were also given a project to create a poster that highlights an African American from the STEAM community. They must have had a career or accomplishments in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, or Mathematics.
In RELA ,this week students worked on integrating/ comparing and contrasting information from two texts. We did not have a grammar or vocabulary skill due to MAP testing. Next week, we will be analyzing poetry and its elements. Our grammar skill will be Action and Linking Verbs.
In Social Studies, this week students completed Chapter 2 Lesson 5, and learned about the United States Since WWII. Next week, students will complete their Chapter 2 Review.
In Math, this week we focused on how to do division using the base-ten model. We also talked about area model with division. Next week, we will be working on long division.
As for science, we started the second chapter from our textbook about motion. We started talking about what speed is. When we were at the roller skating rink, scholars were able to practice real life actions on a frictionless surface. We will use this information to enhance our lessons.
In Health, we are continuing working with our Sanford Harmony program. On Friday last week, we used the song from Mulan, “Honor.” We had a hard discussion on Monday from the responses that scholars had with their families. This week, we focused on what is Tattling and the Do’s and Don’ts of Conflict Resolution.
This Marking Period (2) ends on Friday January 24th. No assignments may be redone or resubmitted next week.

Hello Parents,
This week in Math, we will focus on representing real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant of the coordinate plane. We will continue with Matter in science and begin our review for MISA. Our topic for health is “Those Crazy Mixed up emotions.” This is the chapter that relates human emotions and the effects of the body, positive ways to cope with stress and conflict, disappointment, and failure; and personal safety.
In ELA, this week we will begin our new story "Perpetual Motion Machine". Students will continue to perfect the skill Sequence. Students will learn/practice the new skill Past, Present, and Future tenses.
For Social Studies, students will revert to their Social Studies books as we begin Chapter 3 Lesson 3. ( Pilgrims and Puritans in New England).
Reminders:
- No School January 20th (MLK Day)
-5th grade students will be attending JA Biztown field trip on January 24th.
-Students will have AAAspell/homework Tuesday-Thursday
- Homework packets are due 1/24 and Vocabulary/Spelling test will be taken on Monday 1/27.
