iReady Testing
|
Hello Parents,
Students will start their iReady Diagnostic next week. This first diagnostic only applies to students who were previously referred to S.I.T (Student Intervention Team). Classroom teachers will share student login information and diagnostic results after testing is completed. If recommended by the classroom teacher, students can continue to work on iReady lessons at their own leisure at home.
"What is i-Ready?
i-Ready is an online program for reading and/or mathematics that will help your child’s teacher(s) determine your child’s needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows your teacher(s) to meet your child exactly where they are and provides data to increase your child’s learning gains. i-Ready consists of two parts: Diagnostic and Instruction."-ireadycentral.com
S.I.T meetings will begin in October. A parent letter will be sent home prior to the meeting date to confirm your attendance.
Thank You

2nd Grade News

The first couple of weeks have been fantastic in second grade!
Next week we are really going to be getting into the swing of things! We will be beginning our first unit in reading. This unit is about exploration. The question of the week will be, "What can we learn by exploring different communities?" The story we will be reading is "The Twin Club." In math, we will begin topic 1. This topic covers how to fluently add and subtract within 20. This is a topic that we will constantly be working on throughout the school year. We recommend getting a set of addition and subtraction flashcards (can be found at the dollar store) to practice with your child at home.
Next week you can be on the lookout for our first homework packet to come home. This packet will be sent home on Monday and collected on Friday. There will be two spelling lists on the homework. Students will be assigned either list A or list B based on how they do on the pretest on Monday. If students get 0 or 1 word wrong, they will be assigned list B. If students get 2 or more words wrong, they will be assigned list A.
If you have any questions please contact your child's teacher via ClassDojo.
Please remember to send your child into school in correct uniform, including all black shoes.
We hope everyone has a great weekend and we will see you on Monday!

And We're Off...
|
We have spent the first two weeks of school getting to know each other, learning routines and procedures to have a smooth year. We are now ready to dive into our third grade year. We will begin our curriculum in all content areas.
In Math, students will begin learning place value. In Science, students will be learning about science tools and begin unit on Weather.
In Reading, students will continue falling in love with books by continuing to grow our literacy communities, asking and answering questions to track inner conversations and writing about our reading. In Writing we will begin looking at the Writing Process and effective ways to collect our thoughts and ideas. In Social Studies, we will begin discussing what makes up a community.
Please check your scholar's folder nightly, as graded work and important papers will be sent home periodically. Homework is also assigned on the first day of the week.
Scholars are encouraged to bring in a reusable water bottle to keep near their desk/table to help minimize frequent trips to the water fountain during class. Scholars have limited time with teachers and we would like to maximize our instruction time by having all scholars present for instruction. Please ensure that your scholar's name is on the bottle so it can be returned if it gets lost.
Friendly reminder...
-The half day scheduled for September 27th has been changed to a full day with schools closed for students.

Guess Who's Back?
|
Welcome Tigers!
Here we go (again)! I am thrilled to be serving the CMIT Elementary School community in the capacity of Professional School Counselor once again, now for our 2019-2020 school year together. This is now my 5th year at CMIT, and my 9th in PGCPS... and I have NO IDEA how that happened!?! Seriously, where did the time go? It is true: when you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.
I am so eager to partner with you, brainstorm, and engage with you, in all areas of support of your children’s education. With focus on Academic, Career and Social/Emotional development, we will work together as a team to support our Tigers to be successful during their time at CMIT-North Elementary School, and beyond our school hallways. The elementary age is a critical time in learning and developing self-concepts and understanding capabilities. From tying one’s shoes to knowing how to research and write a formal essay, our scholars are ever-changing, growing and maturing, during their time in elementary school.
This year, I am THRILLED to announce that we have a School-Wide Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum! If you attended any of my Coffee Collaborations/Parent Workshops last year, you know how I feel about this and how excited I am!
This year, we are going to delve deeply into the meaning of our school motto and work through focused Character Education to understand what it looks like, sounds like and feels like, when we “R.O.A.R” and are truly behaving and living as a CMIT Tiger.
Respect Others… Opt to be Scholarly… Act Responsibly… React with Kindness
We have seen the greatest, strongest, most successful way to communicate the importance of school and education to our children is to show up…so get ready parents, Ill be asking a lot of you! ☺
Would you believe: research concretely shows that students whose parents are involved in their education have better grades and fewer discipline problems? Wow! Whether you have minutes or hours, your ideas, your talents and your presence is critically important, and I will work with you to ensure you are able to share your unique skills and character with our community.
I had some amazing parent workshops last year, and I cannot wait to jump in to hosting more! I will have pop-in mornings where you are invited to come spend an hour of your morning with me as I share some of my current favorite things/share new strategies. get your hands in someof our lessons and curriculum. There will be longer parent workshops where we tackle specific challenges we are facing, and brainstorm and create cohorts of support.
Stay tuned for my new “tech savvy” efforts in a video series this year, so that you can spend even more time with me in the comfort of your own home! (just what you have been missing, right?!)
I am also going to have a Parent Book Club again throughout the year, and I am so excited about the casual nature of these opportunities to share and dialogue together! We struggled to connect on this last year, but I have "tweaked" my approach and am thinking it will run smoother this year.
Be sure to check your DoJo page frequently, as I will post there as well as in my newsletter, all of my upcoming events/projects/opportunities etc!
Here we go Tigers’ Den, it is time to R.O.A.R into and throughout our 2019-2020 school year!
Graciously,
Your School Counselor
