A Message from PGCPS ELA Department
"Thank you to all who celebrated the African American Read-In with National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) during the month of February. The African American Read-In focuses the country’s attention on the importance of diversity in literature and learning about the contributions of African American authors and illustrators. We are pleased to announce that we submitted a report card to NCTE reflecting that 23,080 PGCPS students were read to over the course of the month."-PGCPS ELA Department Congratulations to the staff and parents of CMIT Elementary School-North, for your participation!

Last Parent Workshop of the School Year- Fitness and Health Awareness
We had a great workout session yesterday during our last Parent Workshop of the school year, that focused on Fitness and Health Awareness. Thank you to all parents who were able to attend the Parent Workshops during the 2018-2019 school year. MESA Club Competition Day is Coming!
Students are expected to attend all club sessions. I look forward to an exciting year! We have a busy few week ahead of us so it is important that all students are present each session. Our competition is April 5th and will be an extended day trip. Students must arrive to school by 7:00am. Lastly, we are close to the competition. All club members are expected to give 100% participation. We will me Saturday March 30th from 12:00-2:00pm to finalize our presentations, Thursday April 4th from 3:00-6:00pm to finalize boards and complete mock interviews, and possibly additional days if needed. Please be flexible this week. Thnak you for you support. Students will need a bag breakfast, snacks, and lunch for the field trip.

Next Week in First Grade
Reading - We are reading "Hey Little Ant" by Phillip and Hannah Hoose. Reading skills: making connections, inferring, author's purpose, and writing opinions. Phonics: 'oy' sound; spelled 'oi' and 'oy'. (ex: join, voyage) Math - We are finishing up Chapter 12, which is ordering objects by length, comparing the length of two objects, and using objects to measure other objects. We will be beginning chapter 13, which is telling time to the hour and half hour. Science - We are starting our unit on Life Science. This unit will include topics like how plants grow, the parts of a plant, and how animals grow and change. Social Studies - We are continuing to learn about globes and maps. Health - We are continuing to learn about safety in the streets. We are running low on some classroom supplies. We are asking for donations of glue sticks, erasers, and expo markers. If you can donate, it would be greatly appreciated!! Also, please make sure to check Class Dojo regularly for classroom updates!!

Women's History Month Continues!
As we approach the fourth quarter of third grade, we implore you to remind your scholar to stay focused on learning. Your scholar should come to school each day prepared and ready to learn. This includes scholars coming to school in the proper uniform, coming with needed supplies, and coming with a positive attitude. Next week in learning: ELA: Scholars will continue their novel study. S.S.: Scholars will continue to investigate how the nation has grown Math: Scholars will continue to review skills and prepare for PARCC Science: Scholars will continue investigating the invention design process Below are links for practice online PARCC assessments, as will as the link for the Spring Break Math/Science/ELA/SS packets. 5th Grade News
Hello Parents! Next week we will continue “Units of Measure” in Math and for science we cover “Plant Cells and Plants Growth”. For health, we will continue with nutrition, digestion, and blood borne pathogens. ELA: We are back in our Reading Street books and picking up with the story Weslandia! We will be drawing conclusions, determining the theme and setting of the story. Students will also be going back to having spelling and vocabulary words for the coming weeks. We have concluded with our story Bud, Not Buddy and will be moving into our new novel "Maniac Magee". If you wish to purchase this book on your own so that your scholar does not have to share with others and so that they can read at home you are more than welcome. Social Studies: We will moving into lesson 3 which covers how the colonies began declaring their independence from Britain. Students will learn that by July 4, 1776, many colonists felt that independence from Great Britain was worth fighting for. They will learn about the Declaration of Independence. REMINDERS/UPDATES: April 12- Last day before spring break April 15-22- Spring Break April 30- Poetry Report due Please check Schoolmax weekly as grades are updated consistently.
