REGISTRATION FOR MAKERFEST IS OPEN!
Held on the first Saturday in May, this will be the 3rd Annual MakerFEST, CLF's yearly STEAM Festival celebrating our community's inner genius! CLF schools are now eight programs and six institutions across the State of Maryland serving over 3,200 students K-12! MakerFEST invites these students to participate with staff, parents and our wider CLF STEM community partners to feel encouraged to exhibit and enjoy all the day's inventions, artwork, personal projects, experiments, robots, wild creations, noble attempts, fine solutions to typical problems, and makers making so much more! CLF will also have volunteer opportunities available for anyone who wants to help build the best MakerFEST ever! To register for an exhibition space visit https://www.clfadvancedstudies.org/makerfest For volunteer opportunities visit https://goo.gl/forms/y1qs5zfo8OPOuRo92 This year, the first Saturday in May happens to coincide with May 4th, often celebrated by fans of the widely popular Star Wars franchise. We fundamentally feel obligated since astronomy, space exploration fit all too well into the MakerFEST concept, so Community Partnerships is also encouraging all exhibitors to share their project progress with @CLF_CLF on twitter or @ChesapeakeLighthouseFoundation on Facebook with the hashtag #MayTheFourthBuildWithYou. Until next update, May The Fourth Be With You!

Words are POWERful... lets use our power for good.
It’s a situation many parents of kids on the autism spectrum have experienced: you get to the store and 15 minutes into your shopping trip your child has a meltdown. They are crying. They are screaming. You are down on the floor with them but unable to help them get regulated. Now picture the people around you. They are staring. You may even hear someone whisper, “If that was my child they would know better than to throw a tantrum like that!” Except your child is not “throwing a tantrum,” they’re so overwhelmed by sensory overload they’re having a meltdown... Supporters testify about bill to remove derogatory word for people with disabilities
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -- Families and advocates for people with intellectual disabilities gathered at the State Capitol on Wednesday to voice their support for Assembly Bill 20. The bill would remove words like "mental retardation" and "retarded" from state agency documents. The Committee on State Affairs held a public hearing on the bill. Marybeth Mielke and her 18-year-old son Brock traveled from Hartland, Wis. to show their support. They said the "r-word," even if it is not directed at people with disabilities, is still hurtful. "The r-word means bad feelings," Brock said. "It hurts me." Brock has Down syndrome, but his disability does not stop him from being successful. "I have a company called brox21.com," he said. "I sell T-shirts and hats and wristbands and socks." State Representative John Jagler introduced Assembly Bill 20 in February. The bill would replace any instances of the r-word with "intellectual disability." "It is just a word, but words matter," Jagler said.
