Thank you to the undergraduate chapter from Bowie University for coming to CMIT and educating our scholars about of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated. During their time with us, they were able to perform during our school assembly, assist with judging posters from the Black History Poster Essay Contest and participate in Mrs. Glasper's second grade class by conducting an African American read aloud, " My Daddy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr". Your involvement was truly appreciated and we thank you for serving our community.

CMIT NES PTO News! It is Black History Month!
The PTO sponsored a black history performance. It was amazing! Thank you to all our volunteers that helped with Valentine Grams. Grams were delivered on February 14th. Our next fundraiser will be March 1st- March 22nd. We will be selling popcorn. School will be closed on Monday, February 18, 2019 in observance of President's Day! Unit 3: Week 4 Farfallina & Marcel This Week's Knowledge Goals: Children will understand that some animals * change as they grow *can do new things as they grow, just as children can Genre: Animal Fantasy Phonics: /f/ Spelled Dd and /f/ Spelled Ff Text-Based Comprehension: Plot Conventions: Verbs for Now and the Future High-Frequency Words: see, look This week children will acquire the following academic vocabulary/domain-specific words. goose, caterpillar, reflection, gosling, butterfly, cocoon Math: Students will be reviewing single digit and double digit subtraction. There will be an assessment on Thursday 2/21. Vocabulary: Addition (plus sign, add, join, in all) Subtraction (take away, less, minus, less than) Equal Sign (in all, equation, problem, addition sentence) If you have not already done so, please sign-up with your child's teacher to volunteer to read aloud a book to the students for Black History Month.

Next Week in First Grade! Reading - We are reading "Just Going to the Dentist" by Mercer Meyer. Reading skills: making connections, retelling, inferences, and writing opinions. Phonics: long e - spelled with 'e' or 'ee' (ex: feet, tree, me, she ) Math - We are continuing with Chapter 10, which is using models and strategies to add with tens and ones. Science - We are continuing to learn about the planets and their individual characteristics. Social Studies - We are learning about spending and saving. Health - We are learning about responding to emergencies. We are running low on some classroom supplies. We are asking for donations of glue sticks. If you can donate, it would be greatly appreciated!! Also, please make sure to check Class Dojo regularly for classroom updates!!

2nd Grade News
We had a great week in 2nd Grade this week. Next week in Reading, we will begin Unit 4. The story of the week will be "A Froggy Fable." Throughout the week we will focus on drawing conclusions and background knowledge. The spelling pattern for list A will be final syllable -le. In math we will be finishing Topic 6. This topic covers fluently subtracting within 100. Over the next few weeks the second grade team will begin conducting our second round of DRAs. This will give us even more data on the students' reading levels. Please be on the lookout for a Signup Genius looking for volunteers to come in for read alouds throughout February for Black History Month. Have a wonderful extended weekend and we will see you on Tuesday.

Black History Month
Scholars have had such a wonderful week of learning. We would like to thank the PTO for our special guest, Mr. Kwame, we all enjoyed his performance. We would also like to thank the members of Phi Beta Sigma for visiting from Bowie State University. We appreciate the advice they gave about college and preparing for the future. Week in learning: Math: Scholars will continue to learn about geometry Science: Scholars will continue investigating the life cycles of animals Language Arts: Scholars will continue to explore the features of poetry Social Studies: Scholars will continue to expand their knowledge of Black History Upcoming Events: February 18- No School President's Day February 20 - Field Trip to Skatezone

4th Grade Updates
Ms. Ahmed's Updates: In math, we are having fun with fractions! Please conduct home activities that involve fractions like measuring cup math while baking or cooking recipes; pizza and pie division, and other fun ways to incorporate fractions in daily life. In science, we will continue to learn about how human activity affects the Earth while discussing types of natural resources (ESS3). In health, we will explore the respiratory system of the human body. RELA- Next week we will start our Novel Study of the book “Shiloh.” We will spend the next several weeks reading the book, while also working on several skills including summarizing, making inferences, main idea and details, theme, etc. Every Friday we will have a short quiz on what we read in the text that week in order to check for understanding. Students will also form book clubs so that they can talk about what they read, share ideas, and help each other. This is a very fun unit and students generally enjoy reading this novel! Black History Month Essay- Essays are due on February 25! Continue to work on these at home! Black History Month Performance- Some students have chosen to participate in a small performance of Barack Obama’s “Yes We Can” speech. This will take place at our school assembly next Thursday, February 21. Students should continue to practice their lines at home. The day of the performance, participating students may dress up as the famous African American that they chose for the performance.

5th Grade News
Hello Parents!! Next week we will introduce the Coordinate System to our students. We will continue to work on Line Plots. These are two fun topics in math for students. For Science and Health, we will work on the Human Systems with a focus on the Heart. Homework assignment is given on a Monday. Students have until the following Monday to turn in homework sheets with parents’ signatures. ELA: This week we will focus on the skill of Cause and Effect. This is NOT new for students. We are strictly reviewing previous skills with students to ensure that they are prepared for the upcoming PARCC testing session. We will also continue reading our novel, Bud, Not Buddy going into chapters 9-10. Students will complete activities related to these chapters. Social Studies: Students will learn about Slavery within the Colonies. Students will learn about the slave trade and also comparing slavery in the north vs. slavery in the south. ALL teachers are in need of more tissues for the class as well as hand sanitizer. Students that contribute will receive a dojo point for their act of kindness. UPDATES/REMINDERS: February 18- NO SCHOOL February 28- Book Project Due Please check your students Schoolmax weekly as grades are consistently inputted.

Library This week, our CMIT Kindergarten students learned story sequences and practiced activities that helped reinforce the correct story sequence. Our 1st and 2nd graders learned the difference and reinforced the groups between fiction and nonfiction books while 2nd grade also discussed the elements of nonfiction. Our 3rd graders read five stories and identified main ideas. 4th graders were busy researching and writing their essays for Black History Month. Our 5th graders did research using the Destiny catalog system.
