4th Grade Updates
RELA/Social Studies Updates: Next week we will continue to work with “A Gift From the Heart,” a drama about making sacrifices. We will learn how to make generalizations, set a purpose for reading, as well as learn the elements of a drama. In Social Studies we will work on our Black History Month Projects, including research and starting to write our essays. Please remember that essays are due on Monday, February, 25. We will begin the essays in class, but students will still need to complete a majority of the work at home. We will also continue to learn about Maryland’s Environmental issues with a focus on cause and effect. Ms. Ahmed's Updates: In math, we are finishing division Topic 5 and moving on to fractions, which is Topic 8. Please ensure your child is completing all PearsonRealize.com work that is assigned. The February math log will continue to be checked on Mondays after the weekend, so students must study basic division and multiplication facts for review. In science, we will learn about how human activity affects the Earth while discussing types of natural resources. In health, we will explore the muscular-skeletal system of the human body. As part of Black History Month, please consider discussing and researching African-American contributions to STEM areas so that students can continue making connections between what we learn at school and further the conversation at home! Ms. Webb's Updates: Math: We will continue division of up to a 4 digit dividend and 1 digit divisor. We will focus on the area model method. Feel free to watch videos on youtube or Kumon and study your notes. Science: We will continue Earth/Space Science based on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). We will begin to discuss of slow changes to the Earth's surface and fossils. Health: We will continue discussing the Circulatory System. 5th Grade Updates
Hello Parents!! ELA: Next week we will focus on Drama. Students will learn the basics of plays, script writing, stage direction, etc. They will be placed into groups to learn a script and perform. We will also be continuing to read our novel Bud, Not Buddy and read chapters 7-8. Social Studies: Students will continue to learn about life in the colonies now that the colonists have arrived and settled. We will learn the jobs that colonists created as well as how they traded with other colonies and countries. Students will imagine that they are a colonists and they will need to create a daily schedule and also write a journal entry explaining their life in their new settlement. Next week, we will be doing a review of all the math concepts thus far and are almost at our final stretch of the fractions chapter. Students are still struggling on fractions so we have decided to slow it down a bit instead of bombarding them with many different concepts at once and just take it one by one. These concepts include, adding and subtracting with unlike denominators, line plot fractions, mixed to improper fractions, multiplication and division of fractions, simplifying fractions, least common multiple, greatest common multiple, finding area with fractions, modeling fractions and last but not least word problems of fractions. As for science and health we will focus on more on sun dials, more on the brain, meta cognition “thinking about your thoughts,” growth mindset and the circulatory system. We will focus on these concepts for the month of February. UPDATES/REMINDERS: February 18- No School February 28- Book Projects Due Please be sure to check your child's Schoolmax weekly as grades are updated. Thanks again parents for all that you, we couldn’t do it without your support!
