FYI
Black History Month 2019
Dear Teachers & Students of all CLF Schools, This opportunity is available to any CLF school students. By announcing before the holiday break, we thought this would give our tigers more time to prepare for the 2019 Black History Month Essay & Poster Contest. We did so because this year’s THEME is: STUDENTS’ CHOICE!! That’s right, YOU decide. (Ask your teacher for help if you need guidance). As in year’s past, CLF will invite finalists to represent their school along with their distinguished parent(s)/guardian(s) to our 2019 Black History Month Reception. This year, we are pleased to be hosting the reception in Upper Marlboro, MD at our gorgeous CMIT South Campus. Remember, among the finalists invited, (3) winners from each division will be announced and $50 gift cards awards to each winner. Please reference the 2019 BHM Poster/flyer circulating around your school for more details & scoring rubric. Final drafts will be collected by your language arts teacher on or before January 25th. Warmest regards, Mark J. Sutherland Community Partnerships Director Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation

5th Grade Week at a Glance
Hello parents !! For next week here is the update: Math We will be continuing volume of prisms, cubes and the combination of the two. Science We will be continuing biomes and how humans and animals impact them. Discussing symbiosis, how it relates to the ecosystem and beginning the topic of renewable and non renewable resources. Homework: All homework will be online. Parents please check to make sure students are completing the work. Signing the sheets ensures they are doing so. However, in some cases students are handing in the sheet with a signature but all of the work is not complete. The signature is beneficial for the students. Library This week, K-2 students learned about the 5 elements of fairy tale stories. After, our scholars discussed and collaborated by exchanging story examples of these elements. Our 3rd grader's utilized computer and book formats for research of holidays worldwide celebrated this time of year. CMIT 4-5 grades continued to work on posters about the variable resources for research and the importance of credible sources . Ecology Scholars presented their planet projects last week and answered their peer's questions. The questions were challenging and high thinking questions. I love how scholars present ed the projects and answered the questions. We will start MudWatt activity soon and so excited to do this experiment.
