WE ARE STANDING WITH THE SURVIVORS!
As you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To show our support, staff and students wore pink clothing to stand with the survivors and bring awareness to the cause.

Mid Atlantic Fundraiser!
Our school is having a school-wide fundraiser. Students participated in an assembly and received packets on October 4th. Fundraiser items will be due on October 24th. Parents please collect all money and send in one money order with the total payment due. You may shop online at www.midatlanticfundraising.com and the school ID is CMITESN. Thank you!

STEM FAIR INFORMATION
Stem Fair time is approaching. Students should start preparing their STEM fair projects. Please review the attached information packet. All students are required to complete a STEM fair project. Third through fifth grade must complete a traditional STEM fair project following the scientific method. Lower elementary may select a traditional project or a Model, STEM Occupation, or STEM Person (K-2 only). Project topic drafts should be submitted to teachers by October 19th. Stay tuned for a STEM information session announcement. Please note our STEM fair projects will be due December 14, 2018 (before Winter break this year). Our STEM fair and gallery walk will still be after winter break. MESA Club
Congratulations to all those scholars who made the lottery for MESA club. Students are expected to attend all club sessions. Calendars and club expectations will be reviewed at our first session on October 18th. All club forms and fees are due at our first session. Our first club STEM field trip will be on November 28th. I look forward to an exciting year!

Kindergarten News!
Happy Friday! Just a few reminders...Please remember to send in a change of clothes for your child. Also, please don't forget to send in daily snacks. If sending apple sauce or fruit cups please be sure to send in the proper utensils as well. Snack time is everyday at 1pm. Be on the look out for upcoming information regarding Parent Teacher Conferences.

Thank you to all the parents that brought in donations and/or volunteered for Apple Day! We couldn't have done it without you! Next Week in First Grade: RELA: We will be reading Stellaluna by Janell Cannon. Reading skills: retelling, comparing/contrasting, inferring Spelling: Long 'a' with silent 'e' Grammar: Declarative sentences/telling sentences Math: We are starting Chapter 1, which includes adding to, taking from, finding unknown addends, and comparing number situations. Social Studies: What makes a leader? Who is a leader at home? Who is a leader at school? Who is a leader in the community? Science: We are finishing up with light and energy, and will be starting to look at sound. Please remember that Homework is due on the Fridays and we will have our spelling tests on Fridays (or the last day of the week).

2nd Grade News
Congratulations to the Second Grade Students of the Month! These students include Derrec Croom, Beruk Yiheyis, Kesiena Ideh, and Temiloluwa Adeyinka. These students did an excellent job R.O.A.Ring like tigers during the beginning of the school year! Next week in reading, we will be covering facts and details as well as predicting and setting a purpose. List A's spelling pattern will be consonant digraphs. In math we will be continuing to work with equal groups in Topic 2. Please be on the lookout for permission slips for our first field trip. They will be sent home soon. Have a wonderful weekend and we will see everyone next week.

Fall into learning!
The third grade team would like to thank all that participated in "Men"tor Day. We appreciate you sharing your wisdom and advice with our scholars. We would also like to thank all the parents that were able to attend the third grade information session. We hope that it clarified our expectations and procedures. For those of you who could not attend, the link below is for the power point presentation. We would also like to take this time to recognize our September students of the month. Temidayo (Ms. Tolbert), Kenna (Ms. Jeffers), Gabby (Ms. McCain) and Scarlett (Ms. Nick). These students did a great job being of responsible, kind, and scholarly. We are very proud of them! Next week in: ELA: Scholars will review Unit One and review skills that we have learned. Scholars are also learning the writing process. Social Studies: Scholars will learn about Native Americans and early explorers. Math: Scholars will continue to review multiplication facts and two step word problems. Science: Scholars will explore the phases of the moon. 4th Grade Updates
RELA/Social Studies: IXL Homework will begin next week. Students must work on skills that have a star next to them. We will give students a tutorial on Monday on how to complete IXL assignments. Students must work on IXL for 15 minutes per night (Monday-Thursday). This will count as a homework grade based on time completed per week. Next week, we will finish working on Main Ideas and Details and Determining Importance while reading "Letters Home From Yosemite" and "Our National Park Promise. Once we finish that, we will move onto "The Fox and the Tiger." Math/Science: This week in Math, we are learning about addition and subtraction strategies. Please make sure students are logging onto PearsonRealize to access math practice. Homework is on IXL for fourth grade math- look for starred items under fourth grade. In Science, we are reviewing the scientific method and the engineering design process. STEM fair project research is underway, and we are exploring how to commence the projects: creating testable questions, background research, writing hypotheses, and writing materials lists and procedures. CMIT Elementary timeline/guidelines for STEM project experiments have been sent home.

Hello Parents! Next week marks the 7th week! We are rolling on! Students did an amazing job with their Puppet Shows for the September Book Report Project! Please check your child's class dojo stories for pictures. Science: We will continue in these areas: 1.The multiple spheres and layers of earth. Hydrosphere Cryosphere Geosphere Lithosphere Biosphere Atmosphere 1. More on the universe and placement of solar system. 2. More on stars, and natural objects in the galaxy. Math: 1. Continuation on multi digit multiplication and division. 2. Review of all last 6 weeks’ skills. In RELA, students will go back to learning about Cause and Effect relationships. We will be reading the story "Ten Mile Day" and discussing what challenges immigrants encounter when they are in new countries. Students will continue with our novel study "Frindle" and work on comprehension questions together. Students Social Studies, we will continue to learn about the First Americans in our country and how they learned to use the land. REMINDERS: - Readworks.org passages are assigned weekly for homework -RELA homework is due on Fridays -Please speak with your child about excessive talking -STEM Fair topics due October 19 -Be sure that your scholar has a folder for RELA and Math class

E , I , R and U keys. https://www.bbc.com/bitesize/articles/z3c6tfr 4th-5th: They have been practicing Home Row keys. J,F and Space Keys. U,R and K keys. D, E and I keys. https://www.typing.com/student/lessons Lego&Robotics Students noticed the similarities between human bodies and robot bodies; and learned sorting Cubelets based on similarities. They also investigated each ACT and SENSE cubelets this week. Ecology Scholars worked on Mystery box experiment this week. They tried to reveal objects in the mystery box by using scientific method. It was nice to see scholars' excitement. They were so excited to see that their hypotheses are right or wrong. Next week, students will be able to identify the planets in the Earth's solar system. Library This week, the Library introduced students to the book, “The Most Magnificent Thing,” by Ashley Spires. Students then considered STEAM materials and tools towards exploring ideas and brainstorming as a group. Once decided, group inventions and creations were first sketched to include a plan for materials and then created! We labeled their own unique magnificent things and student groups excitedly shared these inventions with their peers. In addition to the above, our 3-5 grades researched and practiced continued familiarity & use of OPAC.
