CULTUREFEST! Nov. 3rd from 10AM-4PM!
This is Mark Sutherland, here with Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation! I know when we last met, we discussed your company's excitement about our six public schools growing to serve 3,300 STEAM students & 5K parents across MD. We do need involvement from our business leaders, families, staff & students. Here at CLF, the spirit of volunteerism and philanthropy is being nurtured because of how it connects to all other areas of business and community. Directly, the biggest mistake we can make is for a false perception that our home office or public schools are elitists. I’m writing to you to let you know that we need volunteers & we need philanthropic support routinely. You’ve noticed our schools, our high standards, and how, even though our students come from random lottery assignments, they rise to meet and exceed expectations. This is not by some miracle or secret recipe. It’s by creating a culture within our school community designed to succeed. There is no guarantee. Have you noticed our innovative approaches are beyond classroom academics? Did you know the construction, operations, renewals, & replications of our public STEM/STEAM schools are accomplished here at CLF? To date, we’ve serviced over $70 million in debt as a non-profit to provide this community’s STEAM academies. Now, for MORE students to continue to maximize their individual potential, for CLF to be able to maintain quality, we know as a business leader and citizens in the same community’s we serve that you would understand and empathize with this reality: staying on top is harder than the climb. That’s why we’re doing things a little different for this year’s 6th Annual CLF CultureFEST. Please let me know if you are able to participate (as little as $150) to secure a vendor booth. Perhaps even just a THEME BASKET to donate for our silent auction (hobbies like golf, or a dinner & movie date night, perhaps a new baby gift basket, or your cool company brand/promos, tech gear, collectibles, rare items that help us draw a crowd, etc.)! Perhaps this is the year we put your company name next to ours for co-sponsor naming rights ($10K) to our harvest-style CLF CultureFEST? Please, help us reach our philanthropic goals for STEAM education programs. Our shared business benefits are already compounding. Come further with us; expand your company’s footprint with our education community! Let’s celebrate our cultures & show folks on Nov. 3 from 10am-4pm that you support MD's #1 public STEAM schools by supporting our annual festival! Remember we at CLF, like all our STEAM schools, are all 501c3 not-for-profits. Know when you give, its totally a tax-write off, too. Please, we really do need our community’s support to sustain success. $1, 1 hour to volunteer, 1 fwd to the right company. Our festival is the platform, but I’m really just asking you to have fun with us in the spirit of thankfulness for the same community’s we live, work, and serve. Find all details attached for quickest Q&A are my event team. Mr. Johnson (djohnson@clfmd.org) handles vendors, graphics, and philanthropy and Mr. Bicer (cbicer@clfmd.org) here is on live performances/music and coordinating with school staff/event volunteers. I’m happy to answer any Qs related to these areas or event info in general towards making sure our two companies work closer together in the future. If nothing else, come to our family-friendly festival. IMPORTANT DATES: Wednesday, Sept. 26: CultureFEST Crew Kick Off Party (Volunteers only) Monday, Oct. 1: 5K Philanthropic Goal Wednesday, Oct. 3: CultureFEST Crew Philanthropic Focus Meet up (Volunteers Only) Monday, Oct. 8: 7K Philanthropic Goal Wednesday, Oct. 10: CultureFEST Crew Meet-Up (Volunteers Only) Wednesday, Oct. 17: CultureFEST Crew Sign Making Workshop (Volunteers Only) Friday, Oct. 19: 10K Philanthropic Goal Wednesday, Oct. 24: Last CultureFEST Crew Meet-Up (Volunteers Only) Friday, Oct. 26: 15K Philanthropic Goal Saturday, Nov. 3: CULTUREFEST! from 10am to 4pm / 20K Philanthropic Goal Wednesday, Oct. 7: CultureFEST Crew Close-Out Party / MakerFEST Volunteer Sign Up (Volunteers Only)

Together, your Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation and the Bellucci Basketball Academy announces a partnership to deliver joint solutions designed to improve students basketball skills. Bellucci Basketball Academy, or BBA, is the only basketball training in New York and Maryland that applies techniques used by professional athletes across the country. At BBA, we train basketball fundamentals like shooting, dribbling, and defense and then advance those concepts to include improving speed, agility, reading defenses, and reacting to the play on the court. BBA also specializes in character development BBA is committed to these 3 core values: BBA trained athletes recognize they cannot be successful on their own. BBA trained athletes take responsibility for their choices. BBA trained athletes never quit. 2nd Grade News
We are coming off a very busy week in second grade. The students did a great job with the MAP reading and math tests. We cannot wait to see how much they grow by the next time they take these tests towards the middle of the school year. Over the next couple of weeks we will begin assessing Developmental Reading Assessments (DRAs) to give us even more insight into what to cover in reading instruction this year. In math we will continue to work on different methods to fluently add and subtract within 20. In reading we will be reading "Exploring Space With an Astronaut," with a focus on main idea and details as well as text structure. The spelling pattern for list A will be long vowel VCe. Please be on the lookout for the Kidstuff fundraiser information that came home this week. These are due by October 1, 2018. We are looking forward to another fantastic week!

Third Grade Rocks!
The last few weeks have been so exciting and challenging. Many scholars are still adjusting and while there will be some growing pains, it is part of the learning process. Please encourage your scholar to be an independent thinker and learner. It is important that your scholar is responsible in school and listens and follows the directions that are given. They should come to school with the necessary materials and they should come ready to learn. Next week in Language Art, we will discuss reading strategies. Also in Social Studies, we will continue to investigate various communities. In Math, scholars will continue multiplying single digits. In Science, we are discussing weather, temperature, and climate. Upcoming events: Thursday, September 20: scholars will receive their Community Project Friday, September 20: Two-Hour early dismissal

Scholars are learning what science and scientist mean in Ecology classroom. Scholars had a few answers that blew my mind. One second grade scholar talked about Molecules. Another first grade scholar mentioned DNA and one kindergarten student said genes when he described science. Can you believe that? This year will be so fun with these scientist. In Lego and Robotics class, students experienced Cubelets with their natural curiosity this week! They practiced playing with Cubelets in their assigned groups. They practiced turning the battery on and off. In Library, last week, students learned about the difference between book authors and illustrators. Then, students illustrated their own book cover designs. The majority of our students have checked out library books. We will continue exploring and practicing the use of the library catalog system. In Technology class for the past two weeks, scholars have been practicing keyboarding.
