2018-19 SY Principal Welcome Letter
Dear CMIT Elementary Parents and Guardians, Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! The CMIT Elementary Team is ready for an exciting and academically focused school year! The CMIT Elementary families are a great partner with the school faculty to help minimize any anxiety students may feel as the school year begins. This is greatly appreciated! Please remember that we want to do everything possible to ensure the comfort of our students, as they come back to school. Similarly to what we did last year, we will start the school year with student training that includes school-wide expectations. It is essential to create a safe and orderly environment to help our students focus on their learning and responsibilities. Please take time and talk to your students about the importance of education, so they can receive the same message from home and school. As the CMIT Elementary Team, we want you to know we are here to support you and your family through your child’s educational journey. One step to getting ready for the school year, and supporting your child’s success, is to establish a bedtime and morning routine. Our CMIT Elementary teachers will start teaching and supporting the student’s learning from the minute they walk in the door. Please help your child see their education as an important and valuable job that will help them to create a responsible mindset to be a successful citizen. I believe your involvement is important to have a safe and orderly environment here at CMIT Elementary. Please click here to review the school educational and operational updates and accomplishments based on your feedback from the parent workshops. Please email me at any time if you have questions, comments, or ideas for ways we can continue to make CMIT Elementary North a great school for every student! Best wishes for the 2018-19 school year! Sincerely,

Gonul Ozturk, M.Ed Principal

PikMyKid Notification
Greetings CMIT Parents! As we approach the 2018-2019 school year we are excited to announce after careful consideration, a ”NEW” dismissal procedure using a mobile app called Pikmykid. This application will help organize the dismissal process (mainly car riders, but also for Enrichment and bus riders) and improve safety. The PikMyKid app will enable you to announce when you are in close proximity of the school without being on the school grounds allowing teachers/staff to prepare your student(s) for departure once you actually arrive. The app will also allow for dismissal notifications, such as a bus rider or Enrichment student needing to be switched to a car rider for the day. It will also allow notification of pick-up changes and authorize others to pick-up your child from school, alert you when your child has been picked up or sent home on the bus, as well as help organize the car line during pick up. The registration process is easy and all parents are heavily encouraged to download the PikMyKid app as soon as possible. This will be our main mode for dismissal communication and will allow a smoother process once all have the app downloaded. Please make sure you register with your personal current mobile phone number our school has on file for you or the app will not allow you to access your child’s information for security reasons. I am a graduate of Morgan State University and I have taught in Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Counties. I have been teaching since 2003. I look forward to working with you and your children! Tips for a successful school year: 1. Start off (and stay) organized Having a system for keeping track of all notes, papers, grades, homework, and assignment descriptions is an important start to any school year. Organizing all papers and notes daily allows students to be able to find class materials more easily. 2. Budget and schedule time We all face difficulties managing our time, but students can set themselves up for success by using and maintaining a daily schedule. By maintaining a weekly schedule, the student can keep track of not only unchanged repeated responsibilities (e.g., class), but also any one-time obligations for each week (e.g., concerts, special afterschool group study sessions, etc.). Furthermore, following a daily and weekly schedule makes it much easier to see where the student can build in time for homework and studying, as well as study breaks. Once a schedule is made, students should be encouraged to stick to it. 3. Ask for help Students need to review the help-seeking process in the beginning of each school year: If something is confusing, if they don’t know how to start or structure a project or assignment, or if they have any other questions about class requirements, students should be reminded to ask for help. And they need to understand that asking for help will not make them look bad; rather, it will actually show their teachers that they care about the class and want to be successful. Students should review the protocol in asking clarifying questions.

The main tool that we will use for communication this year is Classdojo. We will be posting important information throughout the year on Classdojo, including homework reminders, due dates, and classroom news and updates. Please check Classdojo as frequently as possible to keep up to date. Please be advised that the homework for the first week of school will be for students to bring home and return various signed forms. Please keep an eye out for these documents, and return them by the deadline provided by your homeroom teacher. We would like all parents to review the Parent Handbook at your earliest convenience. The handbook contains important information on school policies, including uniform and code of conduct. We will review many of these policies in further detail at Back to School Night. The handbook can be accessed via the 4th Grade Website. We are very excited to build a lasting partnership with all parents this year! Counselors Corner
Welcome (Back) To The TIGERS' DEN!
Welcome Tigers! Here we go (again)! I am thrilled to be serving the CMIT Elementary School community in the capacity of Professional School Counselor once again, now for our 2018-2019 school year together! I am eager to partner with you, brainstorm, and engage with you, in all areas of support of your children’s education. With focus on Academic, Career and Social/Emotional development, we will work together as a team to support our Tigers to be successful during their time at CMIT-North Elementary School, and beyond our school hallways. The elementary age is a critical time in learning and developing self-concepts and understanding capabilities. From tying one’s shoes to knowing how to research and write a formal essay, our scholars are ever-changing, growing and maturing, during their time in elementary school. This year, we are going to delve deeply into the meaning of our school motto and work through focused Character Education to understand what it looks like, sounds like and feels like, when we “R.O.A.R” and are truly behaving and living as a CMIT Tiger. Respect Others… Opt to be Scholarly… Act Responsibly… React with Kindness I will be working with our students on their capacity for understanding Social Emotional Language (SEL) and how we communicate effectively with others, and within ourselves. We have seen the greatest, strongest, most successful way to communicate the importance of school and education to our children is to show up…so get ready parents, Ill be asking a lot of you! ☺ Would you believe: research concretely shows that students whose parents are involved in their education have better grades and fewer discipline problems? Wow! Whether you have minutes or hours, your ideas, your talents and your presence is critically important, and I will work with you to ensure you are able to share your unique skills and character with our community. I had some amazing parent workshops this year, and I cannot wait to jump in to hosting more! Stay tuned for my new “tech savvy” efforts in a video series this year, so that you can spend even more time with me in the comfort of your own home! (just what you have been missing, right?!) I am also going to have 3 Parent Book Clubs throughout the year, and I am so excited about the casual nature of these opportunities to share and dialogue together! Here we go Tigers’ Den, it is time to R.O.A.R into, and throughout our 2018-2019 school year
