PTO Events for May

CMIT Staff Appreciation Week is May 7-11th. Students should have come home with a folded yellow paper. Please check it out. If not, more copies are available at the front office PTO bulletin board. We are still looking for parents to help with bottle water, set up and clean up and with a few supplemental food items.

Mission Mom is May 18th. Moms and female role models are invited to come one hour prior to your child's scheduled lunch for classroom career sharing followed by lunch with your scholar. Our 3rd quarter awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2018. The times are as follows:
2nd grade-8:15-8:45 a.m.
3rd grade-8:45-9:15 a.m.
4th grade-9:15-9:45 a.m.
5th grade-9:45-10:15 a.m.

CMIT Elementary School North Won the Regional Mesa competition!
CMIT Elementary students had a great victory in their MESA Club competition. They will proceed to the State competition. The state competition will take place on May 5, 2018 at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory located at 11100 Johns Hopkins Road in Laurel, MD. The event will run from 9:00-2:o0pm. All club members are invited with parent supervision. Thank you!

We have to thank all of our parent supporters. Especially Mr. Carpenter who helped students understand sketch up, gave ideas, and donated materials to our Story book theme park ride competition. Thank you to Ms. Ahmed for all your guidance with the bridge group. Thank you to Mrs. Ozturk and Mr. Tekin for coming out to our competition to support us. Thank you to Mrs. Asafo-Agyei for your constant support of our scholars. We are super excited about this win. We could not have done this without the support of our CMIT Family.

This week in Kindergarten...
English Language Arts
We will read the story "Abuela." It is a story about a granddaughter taking an adventure through the city with her grandmother. It also includes some Spanish words, so be on the look out for las parablas de espanol con tu estudiantes! We will be working on story elements, focusing on character. We will also be reading with words having the medial /e/.

Mathematics
We are continuing to explore addition and subtraction.

Science
We are continuing to explore life cycles of plants and animals.

High Frequency Words
Here are our sight words we have learned so far. Remember to practice reading and writing these words regularly! (When reading at home, if you see these words, have your child point it out!) All of the words we will learn this year are available on our grade level website under "Sight Words."

REMINDERS
- Homework is due on FRIDAY each week. Remember to look for their new homework packet on Fridays. Homework that is not submitted by the due date will be given a ZERO.
-STEM monthly projects went home. Students are creating something useful out of recycled materials. These are due Thursday, May 31st.
- Please read regularly! Remember that just 20 minutes a day can boost your child's reading levels!
- Please remember to send an extra pair of uniform clothes to keep in your child's cubbie at school in the event of accidents or spills.
- Uniform is enforced daily, including uninterrupted black shoes. Please go to http://cmitelementary.org/uniform-policy/ for more information.

First Grade
For reading, students will be reading Koala Lou. This informative story teaches about Koala Bears. We will be completing activities pertaining to koalas. For writing this week, we will be focusing on Narratives.

For math, students will finish up with measurements in non standard form.

For science, we will begin planting and observing bean plants. We will write down our observations for what changes we see in the growing stages.

Hello parents! Thank you to all who donated to our school's butterfly garden!
It was a beautiful event on Monday.
We learned so much about butterflies and gardening, and students also designed butterfly bubble wands that worked!

This week, we are learning:
RELA: Unit 6: Traditions, spelling inflected endings, compare and contrast, research writing
Math: Topic 10: Addition strategies with multi-digits
Science: Life Science: Animal adaptations and habitats (There will be an upcoming habitat project after testing is finished)
Social Studies: Chapter 4: Traditions and Culture

Happy Military Appreciation Month!! Thank you for your Service!
We would like to thank all of our parents for your support during PARCC Testing, if your scholar missed any day of testing, there will be a make-up day during the week of May 7.
With the end of the school year approaching, we would like to remind our scholars to stay focused on learning. We also ask that you remind your scholar to follow the rules of our learning community and to be respectful to others. Scholars should also come to school prepared to learn and wearing the proper uniform (school shorts, short sleeved polos, all black shoes). Also, if your child has allergies, and must have arrangements made for recess, please contact your scholar's homeroom teacher.
Next week in Language Arts, we will begin a novel study, and in Social Studies we will continue to discuss wants and needs.
In Math, we will solve multi-step word problems with whole numbers and having whole number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. In Science, we will plan and carry out a fair test with a controlled variable to improve a model or prototype. Scholars will present their inventions.

We are finally done with PARCC testing! Huge congratulations to all fourth graders for working very hard for the last two weeks! We are all very proud of you!

Please do not forget to turn in permission slips for the Annapolis trip ASAP! Fees are due no later than 5/11.

We will be continuing to work on our Immigration Reading unit for the remainder of the year. Please expect spelling words and homework packets to continue beginning on Monday.

Girls more likely than boys to struggle with social, behavioral, academic needs
The more failing grades students have during eighth grade, the more likely they are to experience social-emotional learning problems, academic difficulties and behavioral problems during their freshman year in high school, researchers found in a new study. And despite the gender stereotype that boys are more likely to be the problem children in school, the researchers found that girls constitute the majority of youths who struggled the most academically, socially and behaviorally.
